HJTALMAR ARVESKAUG, F FESSENDEN, NORTH DAKOTA,
SASI-I FASTENER.
Application filed March 18, 1922. Serial No. 544,801.
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, HJALMAR ARvnsKAUc, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fessenden, in the county of Wells and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient holding and fastening device for storm and French sashes or like window or door sashes which are mounted for swinging movement as upon hinges or the like, and more especially to provide a device for this purpose of the type adapted for securing the sash in either the closed or fully open position to prevent opening from the outside or closing by the action of drafts or the wind; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a fastener embodying the invention applied in the operative position to a window sash and easing, the sash being shown in the open position.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the sash in the closed position.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the device detached from the sash and with the parts disposed in an intermediate position.
Figure A is an elevation partly in section of the inner end of the apparatus showing the parts in the position which they assume when the sash is closed.
Figure 5 is an end View ofthe structure of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 4 showing the parts in the positions which they assume when the sash is locked in the open position.
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 6 with the locking head raised and secured in the elevated position.
Figure 8 is a detail view in perspective of the seating block.
Figure 9 is a similar view of the sill plate.
The device consists essentially of a toggle lever 10 having the arms 11 and 12 of which the latter is pivotally mounted upon a seat ing block 18 having a rocking mounting upon a fastening plate 14 adapted to be secured to the sill 15 or other portion of the window casing such as the side thereof if the device is prefererd to operate in a ver-' tical plane, said arm 12 being arranged in a slot 16 in the seating block and being connected thereto by a stem 17 forming the pivot.
One end of the arm 11 is adapted to be arranged in overlapping relation with the seating block as shown in Figure 1 and for the reception thereof said block is provided in its upper surface with a seat 17 bounded at its outer side by the shoulder 18, and slidingly fitted upon the stem which is carried by the seating block is a locking plunger 19 actuated by a spring 20 and designed to bear upon the extremity of said arm 11 to depress it into the seat to engage the said shoulder and thus loclr' said arm against swinging movement relative to the arm 12 to maintain the sash in its open position. The shoulder is arranged obliquely to correspond with the position of the arm 11 when the sash is open, and is preferably duplicated to permit of the use of the device on either right or left-hand sashes, to which end the slot in the seating block is open at its outer end to permit of reversing the position of the arm 12.
When it is desired to release the end of the arm 11 the locking plunger may be raised by means of the finger hold or button 21 in opposition to the said spring of which the pressure is adjustable by means of the thumb nut 20', and said plunger may be held in its elevated 'or releasing position by means of stop pins 22 for the reception of which, in
its lowered position, the plunger is provided with notches 23. Also the arm 11 is provided with a stop ear 2st secured in place by a thumb nut 25 and adapted for engagement with the edge of the arm 12 when the arms are in a common plane and the inner end of the arm 11 is in position to engage the seat in the block.
At the outer end of the arm 11 there is provided a sash attaching plate 26 to which the arm is pivotally connected as indicated at 27, and this attaching plate is provided with a catch 29 consisting of a lip adapted to be swung into position between the upper surface of the seating block and the lower end of the locking plunger when the sash is moved to the closed position indicated'in Figure 2. The lip forming the catch is notched as shown at to straddle the stem. upon which the locking plunger is mounted, and the free edge of the lip is up-turned as shown at.31 to provide for an-eifeotivegengagement therewith ofthe lower endsof the plunger -soas to lock the sash in its closed position.
In order to permit of the reversal of the device to adapt it to be used in connection with either right or left hand sashes the extremities of the sash attaching plate are provided with clips 32 in which the outer extremity of the arm 11 is adapted to be interchangeably or selectively fitted for enage'men't by a pivot pin 33 which is of U- o'rm and is held in place by means of a "thumb nut 34. The sash attaching plate is "reversiblewithrelation to the arm 19;,-
and the stop ear carried by the inner end of'the arm 11 is correspondingly reversible to arr ange'it at either edge of the said arm t'o-suit the application of the device to the window.
In order that the frame attachingplate maybe'secured in position before'the remaining portion of the apparatus is coupled therewith, the up-turned ears 35 therea're 'providedwith keyhole slots 36 and the seating block is provided with oppositely flattened trunnions 37 which are adapted to 'be inserted into the slots when the'body portion of the device is arranged with the'toggle lever in a substantially upri'g'ht'position and which can not be disengaged' from'said slotswhen the lever is in the normal or substantially horizontal position'indicated in the drawing.
The inner end of the arm 11 of the toggle lever is offset as indicated at 11 from the plane of the'arm 12 so as to pass over the seating block and it preferably has a spring tendency or resilience serving to enable it to swing freelyoiver said block until checked by the' stop ear. The downward pressure ofthe locking plunger, however, serves to overcome the spring tendency of the offset pc rtion'ofthe arm 11 and force the ex" tremity thereof into engagement with the seat to lock the sash in the open position.
Havingdescribed the invention, what is claimed as' new and useful is 1.
