sAsH s'ror AND Application med' my s,
Our invention relates to sash stops, 01 sash pulley guards for use on the ordinary type of two sash window and more particularly to that type of windowv which has the sash pulleys mounted in the upright sides or Stiles of the frame.
ln the ordinary type of window of this character it is comlnon practice to cut an opening in the vertical sides of the frame l0 large enough to permit the sash cord and a portion of the periphery of sash pulley to extend therethrough. rlhe principal objection to these openingsin the vertical stiles are their unsightly appearance, and a further objection is that they permit a large amount of cold air to pass into the room in the winter time, thus making the room much harder to heat.
In the ordinary window of this character there is, as a rule, no provision made for stopping the upward travel of the lower sash until it strikes against the window shade, which as a general rule is located in line and directly above the lower sash. Many shades are thereby damaged or soiled by carelessness in raising the lower sash too high.
It is an object of our invention to provide a closure for the openings in the stiles of the window frame and at the same time to allow free vertical movement of the sash cord and free rotation of the sash pulley.
Another object of our invention is to provide a cheaply constructed and easily assembled closure member which at the same time is neat and pleasing in appearance.
A still further object of our invention is to provide. a closure member which will at the same time act as a stop to limit the upward movement of the lower sash before it strikes against the window shade.
lVith these and other objects in view, our invention consists of the principal features as shown in the drawing, described in the specification and claimed in the claims.
As shown in the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a window frame with our device att-ached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of our device.
Referring now to the drawing wherein PULLEY GUARD.
1925. Serial No. 28,356.
similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, 1 represents a window frame having upper and lower sashes 2 and 3 respectively. The window frame 1 has the vertical side or stile 4 therein. The stile 4 is provided with an opening 5 near the upper extremity thereof as shown in Fig. 2 for insertion of the ordinary sash pulley 6 over which the sash cord 7 is adapted to pass. The sash cord 7 passes over the sash pulley 6, one end being secured to the lower sash and the other end being secured to the Weight (not here shown) all of this being common construction. Secured to the stile 4 and located, so as to etfectually close the opening 5 in the said stile 4, is a closed member 9. The member 9 may be fastened to the stile 4 by any suitable means such as the nails or screws 8. The member 8 is preferably a stamping and consists of the plate. 9 having at its lower end the depressed portion 10 and provided intermediate its ends with the depressed beveled portion 11. The lower end of the portion 10 is provided with the abutment flange 12. Centrally located in the liange 12 is the notched opening 13, said notch 13 being slightly larger in area than the sash cord 7 thus allowing free vertical movement of the sash cord when the lower sash is being raised or lowered. Located near the outer edge of the plate 9 are the holes 14 for assembling the member 8 to the stile 4.
It will be noted in Fig. 2 that the periphery of the sash pulley 6 extends slight-ly beyond the stile 4 but, owing to the depressed portion 10 and the beveled portion 11, clearance is provided for the sash pulley 6 thus allowing free rotation of the said sash pulley. It will further be noted that the abutment flange 12 of the member 8 extending below the window shade 15 will act as a stop for the lower sash in its upward movement, thus insuring the said shaft 15 against damage. It will be readily seen from Fig. 2 that the opening 5 in the stile 4 is eifectually closed, thereby stopping any cold air from entering the room through the said opening 5. It will be readily understood that the same construction applies to both sides of the window frame 1, but for the purpose of illustration only one side of the window framje has been shown. As will be ses apparent, modifications may be made within Wide limits Without actually departing from the principles of our invention.
Frein the 'foregoing description itbecomes evident that the device is very simple and efficient in operation, Will not easily get out of order, is composed of few parts and is of consequent low manufacturing cost, and
provides a device which accomplishes the objects described.
Having thus fully described our inven-V tion, its utility and mode of operation, what we claim and desirer to secure by Letters Patent of the United States isl. The combination With a Window frame having a pulley opening in the side thereof, a pulley rotatablyl supported in the said opening and partially extending therethrough, a sash slidable in thev window frame and a sash cord extending over the pulley and connected with the sash, of a cover member forthe said opening consisting of a sheet metal member recessed in itsV mid section and providing` lateral extending flanges on opposite sides and at one end, the
opposite end having a return bent part providing a closure for the recess at the said end and forming when in position a stop Y for the upper edge of the sash, said end portion of the recess having an aperture for the pulley cord.
2. A sash cord and pulley' cover for Window frames comprising the combination Y 'with the frame 'having an opening'and a In testimony whereof, We sign this speci- Y lication. i Y
