CLOSURE FASTENER Filed Sept. 5, 1933 A? A? I Invenior J72, 2 0272 e zlraafee flllorney Patented Jan. 2, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a fastener for window screens, storm windows and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide simple means for fastening the frame of the screen or I the like in the opening formed by the window or the like and in such a manner that the device can be fastened and unfastened from the inside of the room.
This invention is an improvement over that forming the subject matter of an application filed by me on February 17, 1933, Serial No. 657,267.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be herein- 16 after fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a view looking toward the inside of a window frame, showing the invention in use for holding a screen frame in position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view showing the latch member connected to the screen frame.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the screen frame in place in the frame of the window and the latch means in latching position.
Figure 4 is a view of the box-like member to which the ends of the spring latch member extend.
Figure 5 is a view of the latch member.
Figure 6 is a sectional view showing how the upper end of the screen frame is supported in the window frame by a lug.
In these views, the letter A indicates a window frame and the letter B the screen frame, though it will, of course, be understood that the invention can be used for holding other closures in place, such as a storm window or the like.
In carrying out the invention, I provide a latch member C formed of spring wire of substantially U-shape and having its bight coiled to form the eye 1 through which a screw 2 or the like is adapted to pass to fasten the latch member to the screen frame. One limb of the latch member is bent downwardly, as shown at 3, and its other limb is straight, as shown at 4. The bent end 3 is adapted to engage a keeper recess 5 in the sill of the window frame.
I also provide a box-like member 6 which is fastened to the screen frame by a screw '7 passing through a hole 8 in the bottom wall of the boxlike member, the front wall being recessed, as shown at 9, to permit the screw to be screwed into the frame or unscrewed therefrom. The under wall of the box-like member has a hole 10 therein through which the bent end 3 of the latch member passes before entering the keeper recess 5, which may be covered by a plate 11, as shown in As will be seen from Figure 2, the ends of both limbs of the latch member extend into the box-like member so that the box-like member limits the movement of the limbs of the latch member and the top wall of the box-like member forms a bearing for the straight arm 4, so that the latch member has considerable strength and cannot be moved to releasing position by a young child, so that there is no danger Figure 3.
of a child unlatching The upper end of the screen frame is held in place by the angle lugs 12 which are screwed to the top part of the screen frame and enter the recesses 13 in the top member of the window The bent ends of the latch pass through holes in plates 14 which cover the recesses 13,
frame.
as shown in Figure 6.

place and removing it.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention wil be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:-
A latch device of the class described comprising a substantially U-shaped member formed of a single piece of spring wire and having an eye formed at its bight part for receiving a fastening member, with the extremity of one limb bent outwardly to engage a keeper recess, and a boxlike member receiving the ends of the U-shaped member and having a hole in one wall thereof through which the bent end of the U-shaped member passes, the opposite wall of said box like member forming a bearing for the other limb of the U-shaped member, whereby the ends of the limbs of the U-shaped member are confined in said box like member.
