DETACHABLE DOUBLE SASH SAFETY LOCK Filed Jan. 26, 1954 INVENTOR. do: MILLER kaw z/w United States Patent Olfice 2,815,238 Patented Dec. 3, 1957 DETACHABLE DOUBLE SASH SAFETY LOCK Joe Miller, Dallas, Tex.
Application January 26, 1954, Serial No. 406,303
2 Claims. (Cl. 292258) This present invention relates to a device for securing a pair of conventional window sashes from the inside of the house against attempts made from the outside by unauthorized persons such as burglars or kidnappers to open the closed window by forcing the upper sash downward or the lower sash upward.
The main object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described and easily applied to adjacent parts of the sashes and to the window frame without changes in the structure of either and held in the position by a member engaging the window frame.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device comprising a minimum number of parts which can be manufactured at low cost and are not liable to get out of order or to need replacement.
With these objects in view and with others which will become apparent as the invention is fully understood, the same consists in the combination, construction and arrangement of elements hereinafter specifically described and distinctly claimed in the subjoined claims.
The description should be read in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming part of the application, and illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of my sash securing device;
Fig. 2 shows the device applied to the sashes and engaging the window frame shown in horizontal section;
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the device on a larger scale and partly in section.
In the drawing numeral 5 denotes a screw bolt, terminating at one end in a flattened handle portion 6 adapted for being gripped by the operators fingers and having its flat sides at least partly serrated at 7 to afford a firm grip. The screw bolt is threadedly engaged with a nut member 8 of preferably rectangular oblong shape and an eccentric tapped opening.
The opposite end of the screw bolt 5 has a slotted head 9 and adjacent thereto a peripheral groove 10 with slanting wall surfaces. The conical head 9' on the left side of groove 10 (Fig. 3) is journaled in a correspondingly shaped opening provided in the conical portion 11 of an abutment member 12. The part of member 12 carrying the conical portion is substantially flat and terminates at one end in a slanting flange 13 and at the other end in a spring hook 14.
Fig. 2 shows the device in operative position. The member 12 is vertically disposed and has the hook at the lower end. The outer surface of the hook adjacent the free end thereof engages the lower part of a vertical frame member of the outer and upper sash 16 which slides between outer guide strip 18 and intermediate strip 19 of the window frame. The bight part of the hook engages the outer top corner edge of the upper horizontal frame member of the lower and inner sash 20 which slides between the intermediate strip 19 and inner strip 22 as shown in Fig. 2 in top plan view. The flange 13 forms the upper end of member 12. The longer dimension of nut 8 is horizontally disposed and after turning the screw bolt in the proper direction engages the outwardly facing vertical surface of the innermost usually wider guide strip 22. Subsequent rotation of the screw compresses the spring hook and may cause engagement of the free edge of flange 13 with the inner vertical surface of the upper sash frame. The spring hook 14 and eventually flange 13 prevent contact between head 9 and the upper sash frame.
If the device is disposed in the manner shown in Fig. 2 and above described, it will'defy attempts of an intruder to either lower the upper sash or raise the lower sash.
It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only and that the invention includes all modifications and equivalents which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device for securing upper and lower sashes of a window slidable in a stationary frame comprising an abut ment member engageable with the sashes, operable screw means movably and inseparably connected with the abutment member, the sashes engaging member including a resilient hook engageable with the sashes and preventing contact of the screw means with the upper sash, and second screw means engaging the first screw meansand upon operation of the first screw means directly engaging the stationary window frame for holding the device in its position and preventing the opening of the window.
2. The device according to claim 1 and wherein the sashes engaging member includes a flange opposite the hook and engageable with one sash after compression of the hook.
