DOOR OR WINDOW FASTENER Patented Aug. [4, I900 (No Model.)
(Application 11 e llllillliil ADDISON F. HOFFMAN,
OF TIFTON, GEORGIA.
DOOR OR WINDOW FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,116, dated August 14, 1900.
Application filed December 18, 1899. Serial No. 740,760. (No model.) I
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADDISON F. HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tifton, in the county of Berrien and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door or Window Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to door and window fasteners, the object being to provide a simple and economical device for securing doors and Windows, adapted to be conveniently carried in the pocket and quickly applied to and removed from a door or window.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter and defined in the appended claim, in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a view in perspective of a portion of a door With my improvement applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastener detached.
The fasteneris formed of a single stripl of stiff sheet metal bent at right angles at one end to form a depending lip or lug 2, the lower edge 3 of which is formed with teeth or prongs, as shown, to adapt it to engage the fioor of a room when the fastener is used to secure a door, or the frame or sash of a window when the device is employed as a window-fastener. The opposite end of the strip 1 is bent under the body of the strip to form an inclined arm 4, curved downward at its end and formed with teeth or projections 5. The arm 4, in connection with the fiat body portion of the strip 1, constitutes a wedge adapted to be forced between the lower edge of a door and the sill thereof or between the meeting-rails of window-sashes.
It will be obvious that when the device is in place between the lower edge of the door and the door-sill on the inside of a room any attempt to open the door will cause the fastener to be wedged tightly and the teeth or prongs on the lip 2 and arm 4 to engage the floor and sill, respectively, thus holding the device firmly and afiording a secure stop to prevent the opening of the door.
The device is designed, primarily, for the use of travelers, and its lightness and small compass especially adapt it for this purpose.
I claim A door-fastener comprising a strip of resilient metal bent at right angles at one end to form a lip or lug having a toothed edge adapted to engage in the floor, and bent upon itself at the opposite end to form an arm which is curved downward at its end, and provided with teeth which are also adapted to penetrate the floor, whereby the device serves as a wedge, and is firmly anchored at two points.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADDISON F. HOFFMAN.
