' E. A. DELANGY.
WEATHER STRIP. No. 483,995. Patented 0013-. 11, 1892.
I wi's- '3' 42' v [WE/V2012:
fl ZW/i dizorng UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER A. DELANOY, OF 'WARREN, PENNSYLVANIA.
WEATHER-STRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,995, dated October 11, 1892.
Application filed July 11, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER A. DELANC-Y, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Warren, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weather-Strips; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeinghadtotheaccompanyingdraw ings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in weather-strips for doors, the object being to provide a device of this character in which the act of closing the door causes the strip to be forced down upon the door-si1l, making a tight joint and effectually excluding dust, dirt, rain, &c.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter f nlly described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a door with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the weather-strip removed. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts in a different position. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the housing and movable strip detached from the door.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates a block of wood or other suitable material adapted to be secured to the lower side of adoor,so thatits lower endwill be about flush with the doo r-sill,forming a housing, as hereinafter described. The lower side of this block is cut away or recessed on its inner side to receive the vertically-movable strip 2, consisting of a wooden or otherbar 3, faced or provided on its lower side with rubber or other elastic material 4. Connected with this bar near each end are fiat springs 5, the tendency of which is to force said bar upwardly and out of contact with the door-sill. The upper ends of these springs are rigidly secured to the housing 1, while their lower ends pass loosely through staples 5 in the bar 2. Intermediate of the lower wall of the cutaway portion of the housing and the upper edge of bar 3 is a horizontally-reciprocating block 6, to which is connected a rod 7, having a plate or bar 8 at its outer end, which Serial No. 399,126. (No model.)
projects slightly beyond the end of housing 1. The opposite end of block 6 is formed with a curved recess 10, with which engages an arm 12, pivoted in a recess in'housing 1.
The operation is as follows: When the door is open, the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2. In closing the door the plate or bar 8 will strike the door-jamb, forcing rod 7 and 6c block 6 inward, when the inner wall of the curved recess of the latter will come in contact with the arm 12, which will cause the block and the strip 2 to move downward and the elastic facing of the latter topress tightly against the door-sill, thus insuring a tight joint therebetween, as seen in Fig. 3.
When the door is opened, the plate 8 will be freed from contact with the door-jamb,
when the springs will cause the strip to be drawn upwardly and flush with the lower edge of the door.
From the above it will be seen that the action of the strip is automatic, being forced into contact with the door-jamb by the act of closing the door and released from contact therewith when the door is opened.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination, with a door, of the hous- 8o ing secured thereto, the vertically-movable strip having an elastic facing located in said housing, the springs connected at their upper ends with the housing and their lower ends passing through staples secured to said strip,
the horizontally and Vertically movable block having a recess in its upper side located in the housing and resting upon the upper edge of the movable strip, the downwardly-depending arm pivoted atits upper end to the houso' ing and its lower end engaging with the recess in the block, whereby the latter is depressed when moved horizontally inward, and the bar connected with said block adapted to contact with a door-frame to actuate the same, 5
