This invention relates to lipstick holders and the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a lipstick holder that normally houses the lipstick and such that the housing may be opened, the lipstick projected, used and retracted andthe housingclosed, all by a one-handed operation of the user.
With this general object in view the invention consists in the features, combinations, de-
tails of construction and arrangements of parts which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawing and then more particularly pointed out.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view, with parts in section o! a lipstick holder constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a view of the same in side elevation;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 o1' Figure l;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing a different position of the parts;
5--5 of Figure 2; and
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 of a modified construction.
Referring to the drawing, there is provided a housing comprising two relatively movable portions, one of which has an end closure. In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1-5 as an example, what may be termed the stationary housing portion comprises a box-like casing having a bottom I5, sides I6, I1, ends I8 and I8, and an open top. What may be termed the movable housing portion comprises a lid or cover 20 for the open top of the'stationary casing. Extending downwardly from the lid 20 are side flanges 4o 2| 22 which fit inside the casing.
While the two housing portions inay be connected for relative movement in vallous ways, in the present embodiment they are pivotaliy connected by a pivot pin 23 which passes through flanges 2|, 22 and side walls It, I1. 'Ihe rear end 2l of the movable housing portion is cut away, as shown, to permit the pivotal movement.
The movable housing portion or lid carries a longitudinally slidable lipstick carrier. As here shown as an example, sliding in the channel formed by lid 20 and ilanges 2|, 22 is a cupshaped carrier 25 for a lipstick or other cosmetic pencil 28.
When the carrier is withdrawn and the housing closed, the lipstick is completely housed (Fig. 3)
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the liner (Ci. 20s-56) and its movement is prevented by the end closure formed by end wall I9. When, however, the movable housing portion or lid is moved outwardly on its pivot, the lipstick is displaced so that its path of longitudinal movement clears the end closure. In this position, thelipstlck carrier is free to advance 'to project the lipstick to a position for use (Fig. 4).
One method of using the lipstick holder of the present invention is to open the housing by finger pressure applied to the end of the iid 20 rearward of pivot 23. This swings lid 20 to the position of Fig. 4. Then the carrier may be advanced to project the lipstick by gravity, f the holder being held in an inverted position. Any inertia or tendency to stick may be overcome by a slight wrist motion. After use, the carrier may be caused to be withdrawn by gravity. any tendency to stick being overcome by a slight jar applied to the end of thehousing or the users hand. The housing may then be manually closed I or it may be closed by the spring means hereinafter described.
The invention in its entirety, however, includes means for positively reciprocating the lipstick and for causing the housing to be vopened upon the advance of the lipstick and closed upon withdrawal thereof.
In the'embodiment here shown as an example, secured to the lipstick carrier 25 is a pin or rivet 21 riding in a slot 28 formed in flange 22 of the movable housing portion. This pin has an enlarged head 29 located outside the housing and forming a thumb-piece. By moving thumb-piece 29 up and down slot 28, the lipstick carrier is advanced and withdrawn.
While the means for opening the housing upon advance of the lipstick may vary, in the embodiment here shown as an example, side wall I1 of the stationary casing is cut away to form a slanting edge 30 terminating in a cam surface 3|. This camsurface forms one side of a notch 32. Pin 21 has an intermediate portion 33 which seats in said notch when the housing is closed. When the thumb-piece 29 is advanced up the slot, pin portion 33 rides up cam surface 3l whereby the movable housing portion is cammed open. Thus, before the lipstick starts to project, the pivotal movement of the movable lid has swung it clear of the end closure. Continued movement of the thumb-piece projects the lipstick to a. position for use (Fig. 4). During this projecting movement, pin portion 33 rides on sianting edge 30 which acts in the nature of a cam ilat to hold the movable housing portion open.
4 and an open top, a second housing element com- While the means for closing the housing upon Withdrawal of the lipstick may vary, in the embodlment here shown as an example, confined between the two housing portions to the rear of the pivot and centered' on pins 34 is a coil spring 35. When the housing is opened this spring is compressed by the inward swing of the rear end of the lid. When the thumb-piece 29 is drawn back to withdraw the lipstick, spring 35, as soon:
as pin portion 33 rides down cam 3l, re-expands and so closes the housing.
Springv 35, by tending to hold the housing closed, holds pin portion 33 to the cam fiat and so tends to prevent any wabble of the lid on its pivot. f
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1-5, the pin, slot and associated cam edges are duplicated on the opposite side of the housing, thus providing a balanced construction. l
In the modification shown in Fig. 6,'however, these features are provided on loneside only. In this modification, the stationary housing portion is like that described except that side 36, corresponding to side I6, has nocam edges but is a.
plain side, and except that on this side 36, about midway of its ends, is a finger-piece' or abutment' 3l. `The movable housing portion is like that described except the flange 2 la, corresponding to flange 2|, has no slot. The lipstick carrier is" like that described except that one pin 21 is omitted.
The modified construction-is operated in the of theuser, leaving the'other hand free to hold a mirror, for example.
vWhat is claimed'is:
1.4In a lipstick holder, and in Combination, a housing element having a closed forward end prising a lid for said open top and having an open forward end, a lipstick carrier slidable in said second housing element, and a pivot pin connecting said housing elements. for relative angular movement and located a sufficient distance from and an open top, ase'cond housing element comprising a lid for said open top and having an open forward end, a lipstick carrier slidable in "said second housing element, a pivot pin connecting vsaid housing elements for relative angular movement and located a sufficient distance from the rear end thereof to permit such movement t'o be effected by nger pressure, and a spring located between said housing elements and tending to oppose such relative angular movement.
3. In a lipstick holder, and in combination, a box-like housing element having a closed for- Ward end and ,an open top, a second housing element comprising a lid for said open top and side flanges fitting inside thev first` housing element and having an open forward end. a pivot pin passing through said flanges and the side walls of said box-like housing clement and located a substantial distance from the rear end of the holder, and a lipstick carrier slidablc in said'second housing element.
4. In a. lipstick holder, and in combination, a box-like housing element having a closed forward end and an open top, a second housing element comprising a lid for said open top and side flanges fitting inside the first housing element and having an open forward end, a pivot pin passing through said anges and the Side walls of said box-like housing element and located a substantial distance from the rear end of the holder, a pair of substantially alined pins located between the pivot and the end of the holder1 one of said pins being carried by the boxlike housing, the other by the lid, a coiled spring confined between the housing and the lid and centered on said pins, and a lipstick carrier slidable in said second housing element,
