With the above and other objects in View as may appear hereinafter, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, in which:

The lipstick holder is encased in a pair of complementary shell members I. The shell members form a cylinder which is closed at one end as indicated by 2 and. preferably given an ogival form. The other or base end of the casing formed by the pair of shell members, is provided with a cap 3 formed of resilient material so that the upper or normally closed ends of the shell members may be spread apart as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. Thus the cap 3 functions as a hinge as well as a closure.

The shell members receive a tubular body member 4 which is provided on diametrically opposite sides with wedge lugs 5 of generally triangular form, with their apexes directed upwardly. The

confronting edges of the shell members are provided with complementary notches 6 which ac commodate the two wedge lugs when the body member 4 is encased within the shell members I. The upper end of the body member 4 is provided with a head 1, and two opposite sides at right angles to the lugs 5 are flattened as indicated by 8. A channel or neck 9 is formed around the base of the head I, the channel merging into the flat sides 8. Below the channel 9 is formed a shoulder H which interrupts the flat sides 8. The portions of the fiat sides 8 below the shoulder [0, are provided with longitudinal slots l l which intersect the lower or base end of the body member 4. The lower extremities of the slots II are restricted to form shoulders l2.

A lipstick ferrule I3 is slidab-le within the body member 4. The lipstick ferrule is in the form of a cap having knurled lugs M which extend through the slots I l and enable the ferrule to be moved between the stop shoulders 12 and the shoulder Ill. The lower end of a lipstick I5 is fitted in the ferrule l3 and is adapted to be closed within the body member when the ferrule is in its lower position adjacent the stop shoulders l2 and to be extended from the body member when the ferrule is raised against the shoulder it).

The upper or normally closed ends of the shell members are provided with internal grooves I6 which, when the body member 4 is raised, engage the upper side of the shoulder ID. The spacing between the grooves l6 and the upper extremities of the shell members I is such that these tip portions of the shell members fit in the channel 9.

Operation of the lipstick holder is as follows 1' The lipstick holder is held by its cap 3 in one hand and the thumb and forefinger of the other hand is placed on the extremities of the lugs 5. The body member 4 is then raised, the wedge lugs 5 acting as cams against the confronting edges of the shell members I to expand or spread their upper ends 2 as shown in Fig. 2. When the shoulder I0 engages in the grooves IS, the body member may be rotated that is, from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in.Fig. 3. This brings the fiat sides 8 of the body member into registry with the V-shaped space formed between the spread shell members. The knurled lugs M of the lipstick ferrule may then be engaged by the thumb and forefinger to raise the lipstick for use. The lipstick is returned to its encasement by reversal of the aforedescribed steps.

It should be noted that devices such as lipstick holders must be attractive in form and that great consideration is given to the external appearance. It is highly desirable that the design of the exterior be capable of some modification. Thus, for example, the wedge lug or, more broadly, handle elements may be materially altered in shape. That is, place of the triangular form, they may be round, elliptical *or -semi-round or elleptical, or diamond shaped, or be truly triangular with straight sides or any other shape capable of spreading the shells I. Furthermore, the range of shape which the lugs 5 maytake, may be increased by proper shaping-of theconfronting edges of the shells;'that is even square lugs are feasible if the confronting edges of the shells have the proper shape.

Many other embodimentsof the inventionmay be resorted to without departing 'fromthe spirit of the invention.

I claim:

A'lipstickholder, comprising; a, pair of com- .plementaryshells forming alongitudinally-split casing; 'means yieldably -holdi-ng said shells in complementary relation; a tubular-body member within said shells and including handle elements interposed between said-shells, said handle elements engageable with the confronting edges of said shells'tospreadsaid shells :and permit protrusion of said body-member; latch means inconporating said-body member and said shells to restrain 'said -.bod-y member its protruding position; -a lipstick slidable .in saidbody member; and means accessible when said body member :is in said' protruding and latched positionffor extend-ingsaid lipstick from said-body member.

A lipstick holdencomprising: -a. tubularbody member; -a slide in said body Jnember having handles protruding rrom the wallsof said body member, :said body havingsaccommodating slots; a pair of complementary shells :encasing said body member; means hinging saidshells at one end topermit spreading of the other ends thereof and extension of said body member therefrom; andinterlocking elements at said other -ends-of said-shellsand on said-body: member to holdsaid body -memberfin an extended position.

A lipstick holder, comprising: a tiibiilar body--merriber; a-slide insaid'ibody member'liavinghandlesmrotrddirig Tfrom the walls of -said body meniber, said body having. accommodating slots; a;pair of complementary shells encasing said .body member; a .yieldable cap fittingbver one-end of said shells, said cap adapted to.permit spreading -of :t'he-otherends =of-said shells whereby said body member may be -:emended therefrom; and "interlocking elements at said other ends-of rsaid shells and on said ibody member ato -h'old said body mem'ber win-ia'n extended position.
