Patented Mar. 23, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,074,542 CIGARETTE HOLDER Moffett W. Eldridge, Charlotte, N. C.
Application June 1,
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a cigarette holder and more especially to a holder which is adapted to be used by women to prevent their fingers from being soiled or stained by a lighted cigarette.
5 It is an object of this invention to provide a simple, highly attractive article which is adapted to resiliently clamp a cigarette at a point between the ends thereof without any danger of injuring the wrapper.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a cigarette holder with means on the end of said holder for resiliently clamping a cigarette and also means disposed on the handle of said holder for operating the clamping means.
By constructing a holder of this type it is evident that the cigarette may be smoked and the stub removed without the necessity of touching the same with the fingers.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is an isometric view of a form of my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the form of the invention shown in Figure 1 showing the clamping means in open position; and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view similar to Figure 2 but showing the clamping means in closed position.
Referring more specifically to the drawing Figure 1 shows a form of the cigarette holder which is comprised of a casing 25 which has a suitable longitudinal bore 26 in the central portion thereof. This bore 26 is restricted at its right-hand end (see Figures 2 and 3), and a suitable rod 21 is slidably mounted therein. Secured to the right-hand end of rod 21 by any suitable means such as welding, is a leaf-spring 28 which has arc- shaped end portions 29 and 30, said portions 29 and 30 being adapted to clamp the cigarette l9 when they are in closed position as shown in Figure 3. A compression spring 33 is confined on the left-hand end of 1934, Serial No. 728,580
rod 21 by means of a button 31, said button being secured to the end of rod 21 and the other end of spring 33 is confined by the large portion of bore 26 in casing 25. A member 32 is also slidably mounted in bore 26. This member 32 5 has an enlarged portion 32a which contacts the button 3| and another portion 32b adapted to be pressed by ones finger when it is desired that the clamping portions 29 and 30 be opened. Bore 26 is closed by means of a 10 suitable plug 34 which is threadably secured in the end of casing 25. It is seen that the righthand end of bore 26 has a flared opening 26a which allows members 29 and 30 to spread when button 32b is pressed.
In the drawing and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although spec'fic terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limita- 20 tion, the scope of the invention being set forth in the appended claim.
I claim:
A cigarette holder comprising a cylindrical member having a longitudinal bore therein extending for a portion of the length of said member, the other portion of said member having a second longitudinal bore which is much larger the said bores being concentric and the proximate ends communicating 30 with each other, a pin having a forked end mounted for sliding movement in said first and smaller bore, the forked end being resilient and tending to spread to open position, the outer end of the first bore flaring outwardly to serve 35 as cam faces for moving the forked end to clamping position on a cigarette when the pin is moved in one direction, an intermediate portion of said pin having an enlargement thereon, and a compression spring disposed around said pin between 40 the inner end of the smaller bore and said enlargement and serving to move the pin in a direction to close said jaws.
