SMOKING APPLIANCE Filed Sept. '7. 1949 IN V EN TOR.
ATTORNEY Patented July 21, 1953 UNITED srATss PATENT OFFICE SMOKING APPLIANCE Walter L. Webster, Los Angeles, Calif. Application September 7, 1949, Serial No. 114,353
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a smoking appliance, and more particularly to a device for safely holding lit cigarettes or cigars, both during the smoking of a cigarette, or when the device is placed on asupport during smoking intervals.
The object of the invention is to provide a smoking appliance which includes a post for supporting a lit cigarette or cigar over an ashtray so that the ashes will safely drop into the ashtray and not onto a table top or other article of furniture.
Another object of the invention is to provide a smoking appliance which includes a cigarette supporting post that has a tray connected thereto for receiving ashes from th cigarette, the post being detachably connected to a base and the ashtray being detachably connected to the post whereby the post can be held in the users hand when smoking the cigarette.
A further object of the invention is to provide a smoking appliance whichis extremely simple I and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspectiv view of the smoking appliance, according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the ashtray;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the spring clamping member.
Referring in detail to the drawings, there is shown a smoking appliance which includes a horizontally disposed base it that has projecting upwardly therefrom a vertically disposed stud I I.
An open ended hollow or tubular post i2, constituting a hand grip, has its lower end snugly seated over the stud II. The post 12, preferably, has its exterior in the shape of a hexagon, as best seen in Figure 1.
Detachably supported or connected to the post [2 is a tray 9 for receiving or collecting ashes therein. The tray 9 is provided with a hexagonal shaped hole or opening l3, Figure 3, and the post I2 snugly engages with and projects through the opening l3.
For supporting a lit cigarette ll above the ashtray 9, a spring clip or clamp 14 is provided. The clip I4 is preferably fabricated of a strip of resilient metal and bent mediately to provide a pair of legs I and 16 which are adapted to hold the lit cigarette I1 between end portions thereof the end portions, preferably, being oppositely and outwardly bowed and inwardly folded upon themselves, substantially as shown in'Figures 1 and 2.
From the foregoing, it, is apparent that a smoksupport a lit cigarette or cigar l'l. Thus, with the smoking appliance assembled as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the lit cigarette 11 can be readily positioned between the legs 15 and IE of the clamp 14, so that the ashes will fall into the ashtray 9 and not onto the clothes of the user, a table top or the floor. user can readily slide the tray 9 off of the post 12, and the post 12 can be readily detached from the stud ll whereby the post [2 can be held in the users hand while the user smokes the cigarette H, or the device may be so held while the parts are in assembly.
The base [0 is fabricated of any suitable material such as rubber and the prongs of the clamp 14 can be readily spread by the users fingers when a cigarette is to be placed or removed therefrom. It is to be noted that the post [2 is provided with a cylindrical bore 18 therein. Th tray 9 may be fabricated of any fire-proof material. 'lhe device of the present invention thus provides a means for holding a cigarette over an ashtray whereby the lit cigarette will not damage a table top and further the cigarette butt will be prevented from accidentally falling or slipping into the ashtray.
What I claim:
In a smokers appliance, a flat base having a stud integral with and rising from the center of said base, a tubular post vertically mounted on said stud, an elongated relatively narrow ash receptacle having a bottom opening adjacent one of its ends snugly engaged by said post, said receptacle being positioned below the top end of said post and having its bottom wall sloping upwardly from the said one end to the other of its ends to facilitate the, emptyin of ashes therefrom, and clamping means seated in the top end of said post to support the lit end of a cigarette above and within the confines of said receptacle.
