COMBINATION SMOKERS MOUTHPIECE AND ASH RECEPTACLE Oct. 17, 1950 Filed Dec. 20-, 1948 ALEXANDER MA res/4,4 LL
INVENTOR.
%(/ QV J Patented Oct. 17, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION SMOKERS MOUTHPIECE AND ASH RECEPTACLE This invention relates to improvements in smokers articles, and more especially to cigarette and cigar holders.
One of the principal objects of the invention is the provision of an article of this character in which is combined a mouthpiece or holder and a receptacle for the ashes from the burned smoking material to prevent them from dropping to the floor or onto the clothing of the smoker.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a new and novel ejector built into the mouthpiece for ejecting the burned material therefrom.
Another object is the provision of an ash receptacle of this character which is of inexpensive construction, formed either by a simple punching operation or made of wire mesh or other screen material and which may be quickly and I conveniently attached to the holder or mouthmouthpiece and ash receptacle made in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation taken approximately along the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail view in perspective of an ejector.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken approximately along the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the draw- The mouthpiece l is bored as at 2 in the direction of its length to hold a cigarette or cigar. The enlarged end of the mouthpiece is slightly reduced in diameter to form a shoulder 3A. The ash receptacle comprises a trough-shaped member 4 having an end wall 5 at one of its ends and terminating at its opposite end in ring-shaped spring fingers 6 adapted to grip the reduced diameter portion of the mouthpiece l for removable attachment thereto. Thus, the mouthpiece may be used with or without the ash receptacle as desired.
To stabilize the device against rolling to either side when placed upon a support I form the front wall 5 of the receptacle with a projection B fiattened along its bottom edge as shown. At the opposite end of the receptacle I form a projection 1 also flattened along its bottom edge. These projections also elevate the ash receptacle from a support to prevent the transfer of heat from V the receptacle to the support.
vide an ejector generally indicated at 8 and which comprises an elongated'vertical portion 9 formed with a lateral portion 10 which terminates at one of its ends in a vertical finger grip I I. The opposite end of the vertical portion 9 is coiled as shown into a cylindrical portion l2 which is slidably mounted in the bore 2 of the mouthpiece and is. adapted to force the cigarette out of the bore: when moved forwardly with respect to the mouthpiece. The vertical portion 9 is slidably mounted in a vertical slot l3 formed throughout the length. of the enlarged portion of the mouthpiece. One: side of the top of the slot [3 is ofiset to provide: a channel [4 within which the lateral portion of the ejector isslidably mounted. The spring; fingers Gretain the lateral portion I0 within the:
channel I4 and the finger grip I I prevents ejector' from being accidentally removed from the mouth-- piece by coming into contact with the spring: finger 6 at the forward limit of its movement.
While I have shown a particular form of em-- bodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without depart-- ing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Having thus described my invention, what I claim. as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:. An article of the class described comprising a. mouthpiece bored inwardly from one of its ends; to receive smoking material, said one end of the: mouthpiece being slightly reduced in diameter toform an annular shoulder, said mouthpiece having a lengthwise extending slot and in open com-- munication with said bore, an ejector comprising: a cylindrical portion slidable in said bore and. a body portion slidable in said slot, one end of. said body portion terminating in a finger grip, an ash receptacle of trough formation termi-- nating at one of its ends in spring fingers adapted. to engage with said mouthpiece and to bearagainst said shoulder to form a limit stop for. movement in one direction of said ejector.
ALEXANDER MARSHALL.
