a rgeSa/mn 1, im /956i Vfimwn WI TNESS:
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, GEORGE E. SALMON and CHARLES J. VOLKMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigarette and Cigar Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to tobacco and more particularly to devices for the smoking thereof, and has for an object to provide a holder for use in holding cigars and cigarettes and the like, and which will enable the user to comfortably smoke a cigarette or cigar without staining the fingers and also enabling the user to smoke the cigarette or cigar to a very small stump.
Among other features the invention comprehends a holder for gripping the mouth end of a cigar or cigarette and enabling the user to draw the greater portion of the cigar or cigarette into the body of the holder and then push the cigar or cigarette forwardly as it is consumed, further providing for the smoking of the cigarette or cigar to a smaller stumpand at which time the stump can be readily-ejected from the holder. lln the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which,
Figure 1is a plan view of the holder.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the holder on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, showinga cigarette secured in the holde ig. 3-is an elevation of the holder and e ector.
Fig. 4is a view looking at the front of the holder or ejector with a part broken away and shown in section to disclose the underlying structure. i
Fig. 5-is a vertical cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 6is a fragmentary elevation of the holder, showing a cigar applied thereto.
Referring more particularly to the views, the holder in its'entirety is indicated by the numeral 10 and consists. substantially of a mouth piece 11 and a' casing or container 12, of a tubular nature and provided with a longitudinal slot 13'. A combined holder and ejector, shown in detail in Figs. 3, 4-, consists Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 8,
Patented 1919. Serial No. 281,336.
of a tubular stem 14 having a head 15, formed of a spring like material, providing gripping prongs 16, with a portion of the head 15 stamped or pressed out to provide a finger piece 17 adapted to extend through the slot 13 when the holder and ejector is arranged in the mouth piece and container or casing as shown, with the stem 14 sliding in a-tubular portion 18 of the mouth piece.
lhe forward portion of the casing 12 is formed with a restricted opening 19, this being accomplished by a turned in flange 20 at the forward or free end of the casing and immediately behind this flange the'material of the casing is slightly reduced to form an enlarged portion 20. A suitable packing 21 can be arranged to encircle the stem 14, the packing being suit-ably seated in the mouth piece 11, this being provided to insure proper draft through the tubular portion and the mouth piece.-
In use, the finger piece 17 is moved forwardly, thus sliding the combined holder and ejector forwardly in the casing 12 and it will be Seen that when the head 15 reaches the enlarged portion 20 of the casing, the gripping prongs 16 will spread out so that the cigarette 22 can readily be secured in the head 15 and when the holder and ejector is retracted in the casin the restriction of the diameter thereof, wil cause the gripping prongs to securely grip the mouth endof the cigarette, and the restriction of the holder and ejector in the casing, will of course bring a portion of the cigarette into the casing as shown in Fig. 2. Now as the cigarette is smoked down to a stump, the finger piece 17 can be moved forwardly to bring a new portion of the cigarette exterior of the casing and when the cigarette has been almost entirely consumed, the pro.- jection of the ward end of the casing, will again brin the gripping members into the enlarged-forward portion thereof, causing them to spread out and release the cigarette so that it will be loosened, and the slight forward movement of the head in the casing will cause the stum of the cigarette, as the head strikes the ange 20, to from the holder.
In Fig. 6, we show substantially the same form ofholder as shown in Figs. 1, 2, except that in this instance we disclose a cigar 23 carried by the holder and we also supply an additional covering or snufier member head 15 to the exterior for impel or eject the cigarette 24, which may be slid over the casing 12 to snuif out a partially consumed cigar, in the eventthat the user does not desire to further smoke the cigar until some later time.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the device described is of a simple construction, which consists of few parts that can be readily assembled, and cannot readily get out of order.
Having described our claim- 1. A cigarette or cigar holder comprising a mouth piece having a tubular portion, a longitudinally slotted casing projecting from one end of the mouth piece, said casing having its normal diameter slightly enlarged at its free end, a flange formed on the free end of the casing at the enlarged end and restricting the opening of the casinvention, we
ing at that end, a combined gripping mem-,
her and ejector mounted to slide in the casing and the tubular portion of the mouth piece and consisting of a stem and a gripping head for gripping the article to be smoked, gripping members on the head and normally held in gripping position when the 'head lies in the normal bore of the cas- I ing, said members being adapted to spread out when the head is moved forwardly to the enlarged bore of the casing, and a finger piece on the head and projecting through the slot in the casing. 7
2. A cigarette or cigar holder comprising a tubular mouth piece, a casing projecting from one end of the mouth piece with the bore of the casing enlarged at one end, atubular stem mounted to slide in the tubular portion of the mouth piece, a head on the stem to slide in said casing and spring like gripping members on said head, said gripping members being adapted to grip the article to be smoked when an end thereof is inserted in the head and the head retracted along the normal bore of the casing, said gripping members, when the head is moved to the enlarged bore of the casing, being adapted to spread out and release the article to be smoked. v
In testlmony whereof we affix our signatures.
GEORGE E. SALMON. CHARLES J. VOLKMAN.
