CIGAR AND CIGARETTE TUBE OR HOLDER.
To all rwhom it may concern:
Be it known that 1RENAULT COURTNEY ACUTT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident `o f Germiston, Transvaal, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar and Cigarette Tubes or Holders, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to cigar and cigarette tubes or holders, and has for its object to construct a tube or holder from which the unconsumed end of the cigar Vor cigarette can be removed with greater facility than with tubes or holders as at present constructed. The removal of the unburned ends or portions of cigars and cigarettes from such tubes or'holders, especially after the tubes or holders have been in use for a short time, usually necessitates the insertion into the end of the tube or holder of a pin or other like means.
The object of this invention is to obviate this and to provide the tube or holder with a self-,contained means for accomplishing the purpose stated. y
In accordance with this invention I construct the mouth piece with an extension which projects to a suitable point into the bore of the body or main part of t-he tube or holder. Upon the mouth piece at the rear of the tube I provide a flange or its equivalent, and between said flange and the rear end of the tube I place a suitable spiral spring or equivalent resilient medium. The portion of the mouth piece around which the spring is arranged is preferably inclosed by means of a ferrule, the rear end of which serves as a stop for limiting the movement of the mouth piece in a rearward direction. y
The invention will be more fully described by aid of the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the tube 'or holder showing the parts in their normal position. Fig. 2 isl'a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the position in which the parts are laced to remove the unburned end or portion of the cigar or cigarette, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the mouthpiece detached.
. All the views are drawn to an enlarged scale.
In the drawing 1 represents the mouth piece of the tube or holder, and 2 the body Specification of Letters Patent.

or main part of the tube or holder. Part 2 is constructed with a longitudinal hole 3 in which the extension or forward part 4 of the mouth piece fits and is adapted to slide longitudinally within certain limits. The bore 3 is tapered at the forward end as indicated at 5 for the reception of the end of the cigar or cigarette. At its rear end it is also counterbored or enlarged as at 6 for a purpose hereinafter explained.
The mouth piece 1 is constructed with a longitudinal hole or passage 7 and is fashioned at 8- with a flange or two or more projections. Encircling the mouth piece forward of the flange 8 is a suitable spiral spring 9 which at one end bears against the bottom of the counterbore 6 and at the other end against the Hange 8.
10 is a ferrule which serves for inclosing the spiral spring 9. The ferrule 10 is fixed at one end in any convenient manner to the rear endof the tube 2, and at its rear end it is turned inward in the form of an inwardly directed flange 11 to serve as a stop against which flange 8 comes into contact to limit the movement of the mouth piece 1 in a rearward direction.
The manner of operating the device will be readily understood on reference to Fig. 2. The mouth piece 1 is pressed forward against the spring 9 until the forward end of the extension 4 assumes the Vposition shown in Fig. 2. In assuming this position the unconsumed end of the cigar or cigarette is displaced or thrust out of the end of the tube 2. On releasing thepressure the parts reassume their normal' position as shown in Fig. l.
What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is Y In a cigar or cigarette holder'in combination a tube which is provided with a parallel bore for the greater portion of its length, said bore being counterbored at the rear end and made taper at the front end, a mouthpiece the front portion of which is parallel and constructed to slidingly fit the bore of the tube so that it can be moved longitudinally therein, said mouthpiece between the aforesaid parallel front portion and the back rearwardly tapering portion being con-' annular flange and the bottom of the In testimony whereof I have signed my eounterbore and the rear end 4of the tube, name to this specification in the presence of 10 alnd abferrukle lixfed all'ound thefrear elnd of two subscribing witnesses. tie tu e, W ic erru e serves or inc osing the helical spring and also as a stop which RENAULT COURTNEY ACUTT' is engaged by the annular projection and Witnesses:
limits the rearward movement of the mouth- CEAS. OVENDALE,
piece, as set forth. MAUD POPE.
