WITNESS: INVENTOR.
7 K6, THOREYJE If E BY [Z75 W404 ATTORNEY.
1 admitted to the nostrils and mouth, with the smoke from the :STATES PAT rnon am, or LOS menus, CALIFORNIA,
I CIGARETTE-110mm Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1919.
Appli afion filed Kay 18, 1918; Serial No. 287,147. 7
arette or cigar primary olyects are to pro having an e ector supported able for carrymg an antiseptic solution, or other medicines, the fumes of which may be cigar or cigarette. For instance-when the cotton is coated with menl holder and is p or cigarette, .said extension tholatum, the ,eifect on the smoker will be to open the nasal time tendto 0001 thus making thesmoke less oifensive and irritating to the sensitive tissues of the mouth and nose. I Another object is to provide a holder of the character referred to. provided with a detachable mouthpiece, so that the medicated cotton may be readily inserted and firmly held in the holder at the end of the mouthpiece and the-entire device rendered sanitary and capable of cleaning at will.
A further object is to provide an ejector.
which is slidably held on the exterior of the provided with an extension movably positioned in the bore of the holder for engagement with the end" of the clgar having an opening, through which the smoke from the cigar or cigarette may be drawn out through the holder and mouthpiece. Other objects will appear as the description progresses.
I have shown in e drawings. accompanying this application and forming a part hereof, a preferred and alternate form of iny device, but it is confidently believed that the invention is capable of modification further from forms depart- California, am the inventor of new as cotton or the like may-be held in the. holder betweenthe mouthpiece and the cigarette for filtering the smoke and if.desir-.
passages and at the same the effect of the smoke,
' which ing from the spirit or enlarging the of my invention, except as I may be limited by the scope of the appended claims.
Referring particularly'to the drawings, in
which similar characters of reference are employed throughout the several. views and 1n the specification or like parts:
Figure 1 is a plan of my improved holder;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the'same on line 22 of-Fig.,1; I v
Fig. .3 is a front end view;
F ig. 4 is a transverse section on line 44 of Fig. 2;,--' K dFig. 5 is a perspective view of the ejector; an
Figs. 6 and 7 are, partly in section and a transverse section thereof online 77, showing an alternative form of device especially adapted for use with wooden elements such as bamboo, cane for indicating the same r or the like.
In the forni of device shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the holder 1 and the mouthpiece 2. may made of amber, hard rubber, or other substances usually used for such purposes, the holder having a I forwardly tapering bore 3, for receiving the mouthpiece end of the cigarette, and a slightly enlarged and internally threaded recess at the rear end into which the enlarged threaded portion 4, of the mouthpiece 2, may be screwed and detachably held. The usual bore 5- is provided in the mouthpiece through which the smoke passes from the holder to the smokers mouth, and the rear end of the mouthpiece may have a suitable form of end 6, asshow'n for insertion in the mouth 1 of the smoker.
An-ejector E is provided for the holder.
comprises a split sleeve 7, adapted to resiliently and movably engage the exterior of the holder Iand a tongue 8 is integrallv 7 formed therewith, which extends forward of the barrel of the holder and over the end thereof, and thence is bent inwardly of and extends substantially of the bore 3, the tongue being slidable in a notch 9, formed respectively, a side view in an annular flange or shoulder 10, formed integrally of and at the forward end of the holder 1. Thus the ejector is prevented fi m 0n I tongue.
' inserted intothe holder and rests firmly against the end thereof. An "opening, 13 is a formed in the end 11 of the tongue, so that the smoke may be drawn therethrough into the bore of the mouthpiece.
twill be understood I ejector E is moved longitudinally of'the "holder 1, the cigar or cigarette-will be forced 4 may, as stated, be coated with any desired serted in the rear end ofthe mouthpiece iii out of the end of the holder by the-engage ment of theend 11 with the end of the cigar orcigarette. I 1
A quanitity of absorbent cotton C which .antiseptic or medicine, is adapted to be in the bore 3, or through'the front end thereof,
, as maybe desired, the end of-the mouthpiece when screwed into the h older serving to form a shoulder; against which the cotton' may be compressed, and the end 11 of the.
tongue 8 serving to. preventthmdisplace ment thereof. In the form of device shown, in Figs.
and 7, the holder 1 is formed of a single,
piece ofbamboo or cane, and the ejector E 'ismounted on'theexterior thereof in a manner' similar to that shown in the other form of device, but the mouthpiece 2,. which isalso formed of like material hasa short length of the same material suitably attached thereto and adapted to be frictionallyheldin the rear end of the tube 1 forming the holder. It will be seen thatdn this form of device three tubes of different dbameter are used in the manner shown, arid practical and eflicient and rat the same time economical form of holder is thus provided. It will'benpted that in this form of holder, the rear end of the mouthpiece 1 is cut on a taper, as at'14, so that it may be conveniently held in the mouth between the teeth. The bore 3 of thejholder'being tapered with theimajor diameter at the, open end, the
holder may thus be made to accommodate cilgars or cigarettes of different sizes, so that w en they are forced intothe open end of the bore this chamber will be air tight, the
rear end-of the holder being also airtight by the threaded connection between the members 1 and 2.
The space provided in the ,bore 3 of the holder between the'innermostslimit of travel of the ejector and the end. of the moutha length/n11 "that it wil that when the piece 2, in which the cotton or other absorbent material isadaptd to be held, is of capable of being shortened so be impossible to pack or compress the material Cto an extent which will prevent afree passage of the smoke therethrough, thus providing an air'tight andnon-compressing smoke filter chamber in the holder. It will be understood, of course,
that when in use, the nicotin from the cigar or cigarette will be collectedupon the absorbent material C and will ordinarilybe. prevented from entering the mouth of the H smoker, thus 'roviding a cool and non-irri tating smokecapable of bein flavored to 1 suit the pleasure or desire of t e smoker by saturating the material C with suitable medicines or extracts. The material C,1nay,
however, be used. for collecting the ni'cotin Without the addition of such medicines, extractswith pleasant results; 7 u What I claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: e 1. In a cigarette holder or the like, a 0)- lindrical bodyadapted to hold a cigarette in, one end thereof, a stem insertible in the op-' posite end of said body, the end of said stem forming an abutment for the recess pro: vided between the stem and the cigarette,
and an ejector having a splitsleeve fitting the exterior of said body and slidalbly disposed thereon, and-an extension over the end of said body and projecting inwardlythere in, and having an abutment thereon for engagement with the end of the cigarette, whereby the movement of said ejectoron said body may force-th cigarette therefrom.
2. In a cigarette ho der, the combination of a body having a bore therein for holding the cigarette in position for use, and an ejector removably and slidably supported on the exterior of said body, said ejector having a .ring like portion enveloping said bodiy,
and an extension over the end of said bo,
and projecting inwardly .therein, having an 7 v annular abutmentformed thereon for engaging the end of a cigarette for the purpose set forth. 4, 3. An'ejector for cigarettes comprising a ring like body portion adapted to he slidably mounted upon and to'envelop the body of a holder, and a projection therefrom adapted to overlie the end of said holder and project inwardly thereinto, said'projectionhaving a ring like abutment formed on the end thereof for engagement with the end of the cigarette for the purpose set forth.
4.- In a cigarette holder or the like, a body having a bore therethrough, the forward portion of said bore being tapered to receive and hold a cigarette, a,stem insertibl e in-the and projecting inwardly "therein and pro- Signed at I ps Angelesg in the county 011 5 said abutment and the end of said stem, as In the presence ofvided with an abutment forengagement with Los Angeles, and State of Californih, this the end .of the cigarette, and. a plu of abI-- 27th day of March, 1918. sorbent character adapted to be held etween THOR RAJ E.
