SMOKING DEVICES HAVING FILTERS Filed Jan. 20, 1954 YIINVENTOR HENRY 5/15 SKY 1 BY J n ATTORNEY Unite fitates This invention relates to smoking devices such as pipes, cigar holders, and cigarette holders, and has for a principal object the provision of a section within the body thereof which carries a plurality of filters and so arranged that one filter at a time may be used independently of the others and without contaminating the others.
A preferred embodiment of the invention contemplates the provision of a cylindrical filter carrier which has a plurality of filter cavities, each parallel to and radially spaced from the axis thereof, so that any desired filter may be placed in communication with a passage in the mouthpiece of the device which is in a position to be placed in communication with any of the filter cavities.
One object of the invention is to provide the filter cavities with filters which will give the smoke different flavors and the other is to provide a readily changeable series of filters so that any one of them may be selectively placed in communication with the smoke passage so that the one in communication is traversed by the smoke.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pipe having a bowl end and a stem end with a rotatable filter carrying cylinder therebetween, a shaft having at least one end threaded, being connected to both the bowl end and the stem end and functioning as a distance rod.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a pipe having a bowl end and a stem end with a rotatable filter carrying cylinder therebetween, said bowl end and said stem end each being connected to said cylinder by plug and socket means.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art upon a study of this specification and the accompanying drawings.
Referring to the drawings which are given by way of example to illustrate the invention:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe made according to the invention and carrying thereon indications by means of which the user can orient any desired filter with the smoke passage therein;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the pipe shown in Figure 1 showing details of construction and;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional elevation taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring first to Figures 1 and 2, a pipe has a bowl 11 with a short shank portion 12 which has a faced end 13 formed thereon and surrounded by an annular boss 13a to form a shoulder 12a. The bowl 11 has a tobacco cavity 14, the lower end of which communicates with a smoke passage 15. The other end of the smoke passage terminates in the faced end 13. Centrally disposed in the faced end 13 is a boss 16, which has a central threaded hole therein, and threadedly engaging this hole is one threaded end of a distance rod 17. The pipe has a stem portion 18, one end of which terminates in a mouthpiece 19 and the other end 20 has a face 21 formed thereon, surrounded by an annular boss 21a to form a shoulder atent 26a. Centrally located on the face 21 is a boss 22 which has a central threaded hole formed therein to accommodate the other threaded end of the distance rod 17.
A cylindrical filter carrier 23 has a central hole 24 therethrough, which forms a working fit on the distance rod 17. The cylinder 23 has counterbored holes 25 in each end thereof, concentric with the hole 24, to accommodate the bosses 16 and 22 respectively. Parallel to the central hole 24 are longitudinal holes 26, 27, 28 and 29, which form cavities to contain filters such as those shown at 30 in Figure 2. The left end of the cylinder 23 has a counterbore 31 formed therein to accommodate the face 13 and the shoulder 12a, and likewise the other end of the cylinder has a counterbore 31a. therein to accommodate the shoulder 20a. The counterbore on each end is for the purpose of increasing the surface contacts between the cylinder on each end and the elements with which it cooperates. The passages 26 to 29 inclusive, are preferably slightly longer than the filters 30 so as to provide settling cavities 31 at each end thereof for the tars or the like.
On the outer surface of the stem portion 20 is a symbol 32, for example an arrow, and disposed on the outer surface of the cylinder at one end thereof, is a series of arrows 33 which point to the opposite direction of the arrow 32 and which are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, so that the user has an indication of which filter is in use at a given time.
With the distance rod so proportioned that the cylinder 23 may be rotated by a firm grip on it and the pipe bowl, for example, the cylinder may be moved rotatively to bring any one of the arrows 33 into coincidence with the arrow 32 and thereby change to a new filter when the one being used needs to be changed.
As stated above the filters may be flavored with mint, menthol and perfumes, to please some tastes. However, the main and important feature of my new and improved smoking devices is the turret arrangement containing the filters and the ability to change to fresh filters at will.
Although I have herein shown and described by way of example, one form of the invention and several modifications thereof, it will be obvious that many changes may be made in the arrangements shown and described within the scope of the following claim.
What I claim is:
In a smoking device, a smoke generating member adapted to support and burn tobacco and having a first smoke passage therein, a stern member spaced apart from said first member having a mouthpiece on one end and a second smoke passage therethrough, a distance rod between said members, and a multiple filter carrying rotatable cylinder rotatable on said rod and having one end maintained at least in fluid tight relation with the other end of said stem member, said rotatable cylinder having a plurality of cavities, filter elements disposed in said cavities, each of said cavities being adapted to be selectively placed in communication with both said smoke passages, said cylinder being adapted to be rotated on said rod to other positions to bring other of said filters into communication with said smoke passages.
