SMOKING PIPE.
Application led January 11, 1923. Serial No. 611,917.
To all lwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, NUMA E. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of my said invention is the: provision of a smoking pipe, wherein the smoke is eifectively cooled before entrance into the mouth of the smoker, the saine being also freed from nicotine and moisture.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of such an article that is extremely simple of construction, embodying comparatively few parts, and these so correlated as to produce a comparatively rigid and highly improved smoking pipe.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in conf nection with the accompanying drawings,
the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part ofthis application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure l is a longitudinal cross sectional view of a pipe constructed in accordance Y with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse cross sectional view upon the line 2 2 of Figure 1. n
Figure 3 is an elevational view of one end of the pipe stem employed in conjunction with this invention.
Figure 4 is a similar View of the opposite end of the pipe stem.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary cross sectional view of one end of a slightly modified forni of the invention.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 of a still further modified form of the invention, and
Figure 7 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of a cigar or cigarette holder embodying the general purpose of a smoke cooling means as applied to the pipe shown in the above mentioned figures.
Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figures l to 4 inclusive, my pipe embodies the provision of a bowl A, stem B and mouth piece C. The bowl A may be section 6 is formed with a cap that is int ternally screw threaded to receive one screw threaded end of the before mentioned pipe stem B. rlhe opposite end of the pipe section 6 is internally screw threaded for the reception of a screw threaded clean outplug 8, and the bowl A and pipe section 6 have alined openings 9 therein for permitting of the withdrawal of the smoke from the bowl A.
The opposite end of the pipe stem B is also screw threaded for receiving an inter nally screw threaded cap 10, which cap 10 is provided with a central opening for receiving a centrally formed plug 11 upon the before mentioned mouth piece C. t
rThe stem B is of cylindrical formation, and is centrally longitudinally bored, which bore is in alinement with the before inentioned pipe section 6, .and as is clearly shown, this cylindrical barrel B is provided 4with spaced longitudinally extending bores 12 adjacent bores being connected by cross channels 13, beneath the surface of the end of the cylindrical stem and at one end thereof. The bores 13 are also connected at their opposite ends by inout channels 14, it being of course understood that the channels 13 at one end of the cylindrical stein B establish communication between certain of the bores and that the bores la at the opposite end of the stem connect certain other of the bores for purposes hereinafter to be described.
`One of the stem bores as 12 is unconnected at one end with either of the adj acent bores, this bore 12 communicating with the central bore of the stein by an opening 15 more clearly shown in Figure 1.
The mouth piece C is formed with a central smoke passage 15, the inner end of which terminates at the upper inner end of the before mentioned integral plug 11, and communicates with one of the bores of the cylindrical stem B bya downwardly extending channel 16, more clearly shown in Figures 1 and 3. At the opposite ends of the stem B and within the said caps 7 and 10 are leather or rubber washers 17, which effectively prevents discharge of the smoke from the bores but allows the same to pass from bore to bore through the instrumentality of the inout channels 13 and 14;. Within the central bore of the stem B, there is provided a mass of cotton 17, which effectively prevents the entrance of 'nicotine or pieces of' the tobacco into the smoke channelsof the stem, and in view of the above description, it will at once be apparent 'that the smoke before passing outwardly through the channel in the mouth piece C will circulate entirely around the stem B, thereby effectively cooling the smoke before entrancefinto the smokers mouth. For cleaning purposes, the plug 8 may be removed, and'v in view of the simplicity of the parts of this pipe, the same may be readily disassembled whenever occasion demands.
In Figure 5, the bowl A is formed at its lower end with a wedge-shaped opening 5 for receiving the wedgel shaped pipe section (3', whichy construction will facilitate the vmore ready removal and attachment of this pipe section, and in Figure 6, the bowl A is formed at its lower end with a wedgeshaped socket 5 for receiving the wedgeshaped'nipple or pipe section 6, which has communication with the interior of the pipe bowl, through the instrumentality of a pendent slot 9 in the base of the bowl In Figure 7, I have shown a cigar or cigaretteholder including the generalV features of construction attributed to my several forms of pipes, and in this instance, the holder includes a stem 18, which is of conical shape, and is formed with interconnected bores 19, for effecting a smoke channel within the stern for cooling the same, which formation of bores is subn stantially the same as those attributed to the cylindrical ybarrel B in the other figures. The large end of this stem 18 is screw threaded for receiving a screw threaded cap 20, whichcarries a'leather or rubber washer therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
That I claim `as new is 1. A smoking pipe including a stem formed with a central bore extending longitudinally throughout the stem, and a plurality of small bores extending longitudinally thru the stem and arranged in concentric relation with the central bore having communication therewith and with each other to provide a continuous passage through the central boreand to the radial bores and successively therethrough back to the central bore, the points of communication betweeny the `central bore and the concentric bores being spaced apart, a mouth piece for engagement with one end of the stem having a plug slidably fitting the' central bore and formed with a passage to communicate with one of the passages from the central bore to the small concentric bores, and a bo-wl adapted for engagement over the other vend of the stem `having a passage Vcommunicating with the central bore of the stem formed'to close the ends of the smalllongitudinal concentrically arranged bores except for interfcommunication between said bores.
2. A smoking pipe including a stem formed with a central bore extending longitudinally throughout the stem, and a plurality of small bores extending longitudinally thru the stem and arranged in concentric relation. with the central bore having communication therewith and with each other to provide a continuous passage through the centralbore and tothe radial bores and successively therethrough `back to the central bore, the points of communication between the central bore and the concentric bores being. spaced apart, a mouth piece for engagement with one end of the stem having a plug slidably fitting the central bore and formed with a passage to communica-tewith one of the passages from the central bore to the small concentric boresa pipe section for engagement over the other end ofthestem adapted to close the'small concentric longitudinal bores atr the end portion ofi the stem except for inter-communication therebetween and formed with a central bore communicating with the central bore' of said stem, and a bowl mounted on saidpipe section having an opening registeringy with'an opening in saidv pipe section to provide communication of the bowl .with the central bore. Y
In testimonyA whereof I affix my signature.
