SMOKING PIPE.

Be it known that l, ALBERT G. BLoMsTEn, a citizen of the United States, and alresident of the city of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of Galitornia, have invented a new and useful. Improvement in Smoking Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in smoking pipes and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.

An object of my invention is to provide a novel form of smoking pipe in which the flow of smoke drawn from the bowl is retarded during its passage through the stem of the pipe, thereby permittingthe smoke to be cooled and purified before being drawn into the smokers mouth.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described in which the smoke is compelled to travel by a circuitous route from the bowl to the smokers mouth, thereby permitting nicotine, ashes, and other substances drawn from the bowl to be deposited en route.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described. in which means is provided for preventing I saliva from being drawn into the smokers mouth.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended. claim.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through the device which is adapted to be used as a cigar and ci arette holder,

Figure 2 is a section along the line 9. of Figure 1,

Figure 8 is a section along the line of Figure l,

Figure 4 is a central longitudinal section of a modified form of the device when used as a pipe.

Referring now to Figures 1, 2 and 3, it will be noted that I provide a member 80 which is adapted to hold a cigar or cigarette, a tapering stem 31, and a mouthpiece 32, The member has a cavity 33 in which the cigar or cigarette is inserted. The stem 31 hollow t'or practically its entire length, thus forming a reservoir 84%.

The stem is threaded internally at 35 to receive'a threaded end 36 ot' the member 80. A tapering tubular extension 37 to the member 30 projects within the reservoir 34;, thus forming an annular smoke passage 38 in the reservoir 34. A plurality of lines 39 connect the cavity and the annular smoke passage The mouthpiece 32 has a nipple end 40 adapted for screwing into the internally threaded tapered end 41 of the stem 31. A centrally disposed salivareservoir 42 is also provided in the mouthpiece 32. A central smoke passage 43 extends from the saliva reservoir 42 through. the mouth piece A tube l-l which fits the bore 1-5 01 the nipple 4L0 is inserted therethrough and has one end projecting within the tubular extension 8T to term an annular smoke passage 46. The other end of the tube 4A; projects within the saliva reservoir 42. T he tube M has a central bore l7.

From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood.

Smoke from a cigar or igarette will be drawn through the flues 39 into the annular smoke passage 38 and must then pass backwardly through the inner annular smoke passage 46 and then through the central bore 41-7, the reservoir 42, and the smoke passage 43 into a smokers mouth. Since the tube 44, having the central bore 47, projects within the reservoir 42, no saliva will be drawn intothe mouth. t

Referring now to Figure 4 of the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I provide in the form of the device therein illustrated a pipe bowl 50, having a cavity 51 and an externally threaded lateral extension 52 which is screwed into an internally threaded end 35 of the stem 31, instead of providing the member 30 as in the form of the device illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3. The lateral extension 52 has a plurality of fines 53 which correspond to the fines 39 illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, and a tubular extension 54: which corresponds to the tubular extension 37 illustrated in Figures 1. 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings. Otherwise the construction of the form ot the device illustrated in Figure at is identical with that illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 8, and l have accordingly indicated correspondin parts by the same reference nu morals. derstood from the foregoing disclosure of the operation of the form of the device illus trated in Figures 1, 2 and 3.

It Will be apparent that the two forms of the device are identical in construction with respect to each other except in the construe tion of the members 30 and 50.

A cool, dry smoke under all conditions is assured when my improved smoking device is used.

It is obvious that various modifications and adaptations of the forms of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings may be provided Without departing from the spirit-and scope of my invention as set forth in the foregoing disclosure and outlined particularly in the appended claim. I therefore consider such modifications and adaptations as my own.

I claim:

A device of the type described comprising a member adapted to hold a cigar or ciqarette and having a diagonally extending flue, said member also having a tubular extension, a stem having one end secured to said member and having a reservoir in which said tubular extension projects, thus providing" an annular smoke passage with which said diagonally extending flue communicates, a mouthpiece. having a central bore enlarged into a reservoir and being provided with a nipple adapted for screw ing into a threaded end of said stem, and a tube extending through said nipple and having one end projecting within said tubular extension and spaced therefrom to provide an inner annular smoke passage in said first named reservoir, said tube having its other end projecting within said second named reservoir.
