Be it known that I, GEORGE BENJAMIN NOR- TON Dow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, county of Hillsboro, State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to pipes, and particularly to pipes for the smoking of tobacco. Many who consume tobacco in this manner when for any reason they are compelled to stop before the tobacco in the bowl is completely consumed desire to retain the unburned charge and to put away the pipe in this condition without danger'of fire or of spilling the tobacco from the bowl.

To this end the present invention contemplates a pipe which shall have means for stopping the mouth of the tobacco-opening of the bowl, said means consisting of a stopper associated with the stem and adapted to fit both the bowl-opening and stem-opening.

In the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout, Figure l is a view of the pipe; Fig. 2, a section of the same; Fig. 3, a view of the pipe with the bowl closed. Figs. 4 and 6 illustrate modifications of the button structure, and Fig. 5 a detail of a further modification.

B is a bowl having recesses B B for tobacco and the pipe-stem, respectively.

S is a stem having the smoke-passage s therethrough.

P is a plug adapted to fit the mouth of either of the openings B B and is pierced by a passage 21 for the smoke. This plug P may be formed on the stem S as a part thereof, as shown in Fig. 5, or made as a separate memher, as shown in the figures of the drawings, particular attention being called to Figs. 4 and 6, which illustrate various modifications of the plug member, which may be of the conical form P or in the form of a shoulder-button, as P The stem S may also be of any form, straight or curved, and may enter the plug at other than a right angle to the bowl, as shown in the drawings.

The bowl proper is preferably bored with an extension B of smaller diameter than the tobacco-cavity, leavingon the wall of the pipe between said last-named cavity and the extension an annular shoulder upon which is located a perforated disk D, which may be of any suitable material, as tin. A slit bushing E, of any suitable material, which may also be of tin, which is found satisfactory in practice, is inserted within the bowl and forced down upon the disk D to retain the same in place and protect the body of the pipe. If it is desired, the disk and bushing may be made together in one piece or in the form of a cup, in which form the parts are more readily removed for the purpose of cleaning the pipe or replacing members which are defective or which have been injured.

The bowl B may be of any suitable internal structure, although the disk and bushing above described are found satisfactory in manufacture; but this structure and arrangement may obviously be modified or changed, and various other forms of plugs may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention.

What I therefore claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a pipe, the combination of a bowl having a tobacco-cavity and a stem-cavity, and a stem having a plug adapted to fit either of said cavities.

2. In a pipe, the combination of a bowl member having tobacco and stem openings, of a perforated plug member adapted to fit either of said openings, and a stem member adapted to fit'the perforation in the plug member.

3. In a pipe, the combination of a bowl member having tobacco and stem openings, of a perforated tapered plug member adapted to fit either of said openings, and a stem mem ber adapted fit the perforation in the plug member.

4. Inapipe, the combination-ofa bowl member having a tobacco-opening and an extension thereof of smaller diameter, an annular shoulder between said openings, a perforated disk located on said shoulder, a stem-opening entering said extension-bore of the tobaccoopening, a perforated tapered plug member adapted to fit either the bowl-opening or the stem-opening, and a stem to fit said perforated plug. 4

5. In a pipe, the combination of a bowl member having a tobacco-opening and an extension thereof of smaller diameter, an annular shoulder between said openings, a perforated I disk located on said shoulder, a stem-opening entering said extension-bore of the tobaccoopening, and a stem having a plug member adapted to fit either the bowl-opening or the stem-opening.

6. Ina pipe, the combination of abowl member having a tobacco-opening and an extension thereof of smaller diameter, an annular shoulder between said openings, aperforated disk located on said shoulder, a bushing fitting said bowl above said disk, a stem-opening entering said extension-bore of the tobaccoopening, and a stem having a plug member adapted to fit either the bowl-opening or the stem-opening.
