To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY F. SGHULTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented new' and useful improvements in 'Tobacco Pipes, of which the following is a specication.

This invention relates to improvements in tobacco pipes and more particularly to that class of -tobacco pipes known as cigar pipes.

` One object of the invention is the provision of a cigar pipe provided with a tobacco holding casing to receive the tobacco holder, the said casin being so constructed that sullcient air will be permitted to be drawn to the burning tobacco without the danger of the tobacco escaping from the holder. Another object .is the provision of a tobucco holder provided with an asbestos -coil positioned adjacent to the mouthpiece orbit` of the holder, whereby the smoke willpass through the convolntions of the coil, thus preventin the tobacco from being drawn through t smoker, the said coil being to a great extent absorbent, thus extracting a considerable portion of the nicotin from the smoke as it passes therethrough. y

With these and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinater appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described,

illustrated in the accompapfing drawings and more articularl point out in the appended c aims; it eing understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without: departing from the spirlt or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

The tobacco holder is designated in gen- .eral by the numeral 9 and comprises a cylindrical portion 10 ofl a diameter to snug lit within the bore 6,*the said cylindrical portion corresponding in length to the length of the bore, or substantially so. The outer end of the cylindrical portion isprovided with a shoulder 11 corresponding in diameter to the diameter of the open end of the casing and forming an abutting surface to limit the inward movement of the tobacco holder. That 4portionl of the tobacco holder extending rearwardlylfrom the shoulder is tapered to conform to theconguration of one end of a cigar. Thetobacco holder is rovided with an axial bore 12 extending rom the end of the-cylindrical portion to a point a trifle beyond the shoulder 11 and,

formed in the rear or outer end of the tobacco holder is a longitudinal opening 13 in axial alinement with but considerably less in diameter than the diameter of the bore 12.

The opening 13 receives the mouthpiece or bit 14.

The bore 12 of the tobacco holder is provided with a lining of asbestos designated by the numeral 15 and positioned at the inner end ofthe bore is a coil of asbestos designated by the numeral 16. The coil is of such diameter that it tightly fits within' the'holder and provides a ase for the tobacco while the s aces between theconvolution's of the coi are sufficient to ermit the smoker to draw the smoke of t e tobacco therethrough. By the provision of the coil it will 'be observed that a filter is provided owing to the asbestos coil being to a great degree absorbent, thus 4taking.; a

In the'use of the device t e cylindricalportion of the holder is filled with tobacco and lighted, after which the said cylindrical casing, whereupon the smoking operation may be performed in the usual manner.

2. In a-cigarv pipe comprising a casing provided 'with an axial bore extending from one end to the medial portion of the casing, and further provided with a pair of air conduits of less diameter than the bore and arranged at right angles to each other, one

in presence o of said conduits extending transverse the casing at a point'between the inner end of the bore and closed end of the casing, and the other-of said conduits extending longitudinally of the casing having one end communicating with the inner end of the'bore and its. opposite end leading into the transverse conduit, and a tubular tobacco holder bore of said .telescoping into the casing.

3. A ci ar pipe comprising a casing pro' vided wit an axial bore and an air conduit leading from the outer end of the casing to the inner end of the bore a tubular tobacco holder havin a cylindrical end portion to slidingly fit 1n the bore of the casing and provided at its opposite end with a bit, said cylindrical portion being provided with an axial bore extending from one end to a point adjacent' the o nating in a reduc longitudinal opening to receive a mouthpiece, a lining of asbestos positioned on the lnner surface of said cylindrical portion, and an asbestos coil positioned at the base of -the bore 'of said holder, for the purposes described.
