AIR COOLED AND FILTERED SMOKE Filed May 27, 1955 INVENTOR- f/Pl/VC/S 7. fiJW/I S ATTORNEYS United States Patent AIR COOLED AND FILTERED SMOKE Francis T. Downs, Sunbury, Pa. Application May 27, 1955, Serial No. 511,703
1 Claim. (Cl. 131-4) This invention relates to air cooling and filtering of gases and condensates resulting from burning tobacco of cigarettes, cigars, and pipes, and in particular, openings spaced from the butt or heel of a cigarette or cigar or from the base of a bowl of a pipe providing means to permit cooling air to be drawn into the tobacco of the device at a point positioned between the burning tobacco and mouthpiece or butt whereby condensates are filtered out and hot gases of combustion are cooled by the air and filtered by tobacco between the air opening and tip of the butt.
The purpose of this invention is to prevent irritation of delicate membranes of the throat and head and also of passages leading to the lungs and stomach by admitting air into the smoking device and filtering the condensates and gases of combustion with tobacco of the device.
Various attempts have been made to cool gases of combustion of cigarettes, cigars, and pipes and other attempts have been made to use filtering elements in such devices, however, it is difiicult to admit cool air into the tobacco of a cigarette without interfering with burning thereof and without wasting a portion of the area containing tobacco. With this thought in mind, this invention contemplates utilizing the normally waste tobacco of the butt or heel for filtering the hot gases of combustion and assisting the filtering action by introducing cool air at a point between the butt or heel and burning portion of the device.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for admitting air into cigarettes, cigars, and pipes at points spaced from burning portions thereof whereby the conventional burning area is maintained and the waste tobacco of the base or butt is used for filtering.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for introducing air into the heel of a cigarette or cigar or into the base of a pipe without changing the sizes of the cigarette, cigar, or pipe.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for introducing cool air into smoking devices which cools hot gases of combustion and also facilitates using tobacco of the heel or butt of a cigarette or cigar or base of a pipe for filtering.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention embodies a cigar having an opening in the wrapper outer surface spaced from the end opposite to the end in which the tobacco burns whereby cool air is 6 admitted to gases passing mto the mouth of a smoker and wherein the hot gases of combustion and condensates are cooled and filtered by tobacco in the butt or heel of a cigar as the gases are drawn through the tobacco by a smoker.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description, taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a an air tube extended therethrough.
Figure 2 is a cross section through the cigar shown in Figure 1, being taken on line 66 thereof, also showing the air tube extended through the cigar.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the cigar shown in Figure 1 with parts broken away.
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing a split air tube such as the tube mounted in the cigar shown in Figure 1 wherein the tube is provided with a continuous open slot in one side to permit air to be drawn from the ends thereof into tobacco in the butt or heel of the cigar.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts, the improved air cooled smoking device of this invention includes the design as illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive.
Upon drawing on the end of the cigar placed in the mouth, air is drawn through the ends of a tube 17 having a continuous slot 18 in one side with the tube positioned in a cigar 19 as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and the air drawn through the slot from the ends of the tube mixes with hot gases of combustion of the burning cigar and passes through tobacco in an area 20 in the butt or heel of the cigar whereby the hot gases of combustion are cooled by the air and filtered by the tobacco in the section 20 before passing into the mouth of the smoker.
It will be understood that other modifications, within the scope of the appended claim, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
In a smoking device, the combination which comprises a tubular shell filled with tobacco and having opposed openings through the wall thereof, and a split air tube extended through the openings and into tobacco within the shell, said split extending throughout the length of the tube whereby in smoking air is drawn through the split of the air tube into the tobacco, co-mingling with tobacco in the shell for cooling gases from the burning tobacco of the device as the gases are drawn into the mouth of a smoker.
