Description

(No Model.)-
O. W. ALLISON.
CIGARETTE.
Patented July 25, 1882.
OSCAR W. ALLISON, OF ROCHESTER,
PATENT ()FFICE.
NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN A. ALLISON, OF SAME PLACE.
CIGARETTE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,576, dated July 25, 1882.
Application filed May 20, 1882. (No model.)
after more fully described.
My improvemen t in cigarettes is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a cigarette embodying my invention. of the same, taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view.
1n the manufacture of cigarettes by machinery one of the difficulties which has heretofore been encountered is that the tobacco filling is,
packed so tightly by theoperationgfihe machine that the passage of smoke therethrough is retarded, and such cigarettes therefore draw hard.
My invention is designed to remove this difficulty; and it consists in providing the tobacco filler with a series of openings or perforations at suitable distances apart, whereby the free, passage of smoke through the cigarette is secured.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the paper wrapper or casing of the cigarette, a portion of which is removed in Figs. 1 and 2 to show the tobacco filler, and C C C are the apertures or perforations in the filler. -The perforations may extend entirely across the filler, or, as represented by the dotted lines 0, Fig. 2, they maypassonlypartially through the filler. The openings may be made either at right angles withthe axis of the cigarette or they may be inclined obliquely thereto, and they may be placed at such distances apart as to insure the required freedom in the passage of smoke through the tiller.
Fig. 2 isa side view Cigarettes embodying my improvement may be made by any suitable mechanism adapted to produce the before-mentioned perforations in the tobacco fillerl The perforations may be produced by a series of pinsor wires projectin g from the feeding device in theiiiacliiiieih which the cigarettes are made, or they may be produced by a special' arrangement of mechanism adapted to this purpose, the pin or pins for prod ucin g the perforations being forced into the filler and retracted by a revolving cam or eccentric or other analogous device. The tobacco tiller should not be subjected to any considerable degree of pressure after the perforations have been made. The perforations answer the purpose, besides facilitating the passage of the smoke, of a distinguishing brand' or mark by which cigarettes embodying my present invention may always bedistinguished from others on the removal of a portion of the wrapper.
I am aware that tobacco has been heretofore condensed into cigars provided-with longitudinal apertures, as shown in the patent of Lindsley, No. 29,436, dated July 31, 1860, and such construction I disclaim. I also disclaim anything shown or described in the patent of Schartan, No. 185,264, December 12, 1876.
I claim- Y 1. As a new article of manufacture, cigarettes the tobacco filling of which contains transverse perforations, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with asuitable cigarettecasing, of the tobacco filling provided with transverse perforations, substantially as described.
