To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES WV. IVORY, a.

subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,

State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new same, while in a measure, allowing the lips to close around said tip to preserve the draft in the cigar while being smoked.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a mouth piece for a cigar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a rear end view thereof. Fig. i represents a longitudinal section thereof on line :cw, Fig. 1. Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 represent perspective views and an elevation respectively of other embodiments of the invention.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings z-1 designates the mouth piece which is formed of

2 and 3, each of which is provided at or about their rear ends with ears 4:, in which is inserted and secured the pintle 5 which forms the axis of the jaws and permits the latter to be opened and closed at their forward ends. The inner faces of said jaws are curved to conform to the contour of the tip end portion of a cigar so as to properly and nicely embrace the same, avoiding rotation of the cigar in the piece or vice-versa. On said pintle is the coil spring 6, whose ends bear respectively in opposite directions against the heel ends of said

2 and 3, so as to exert closing pressure on the latter, and cause them to take firm hold on a cigar when applied thereto, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. On the inner sides of the jaws are the spurs or prongs 7 which are adapted to pierce the cigar and so prevent longitudinal and lateral displacement of the jaws therefrom. The sides of the jaws are cut away forming the inwardly-extending recesses 8.

at said sides and so uncover the relative portions of the cigar while the other portions of the latter are covered by the main lengths of the jaws. The rearterminals of the jaws are somewhat flaring and so the portions of the jaws forward of said terminals are somewhat depressed, the depressions being anterior to the fastening pivots 5.

It will be noticed that the rear end of the mouth piece is open due to the separation of the jaws at said end, so that the smoker can draw through the same and so draw from the adjacent end of the cigar, the latter as usual in smoking.

The operation is as follows :The front of the jaws are opened by pressure on the rear thereof, and the tip end of a cigar inserted between thejaws. The jaws are then allowed to close'on the cigar when the spurs 7 pierce the latter, it being evident that the spring 6 presses the jaws in their set position upon the cigar and holds them thercat, preventing improper opening of the same, while the said spurs 7 prevent shifting of the jaws from the cigar in longitudinal, lateral or rotary direction thereof. 2 and 3 may now be inserted in the mouth when the teeth of the smoker will contact with and press against the de pressed portions of said jaws and thus be removed from direct and injurious contact with the tobacco, while the lips may .close around the jaws and the side of the cigar at the recesses 8, so that the tip end of the cigar will be sufliciently enveloped by the lips to effect the draft on the cigar by the mouth through the open end of the jaws and the tip end of the cigar, said end being cut as usual. When the rear ends of the jaws are pressed together the front ends of the same will open, and so separate from the cigar, the spurs 7 then emerging from the cigar, and so the device is removed from its operative position ready for further use on another cigar. The outer contour of the jaws is somewhat curved so as to conform to the lips of the smoker and prevent the same from slipping forwardly thereon, and while they may be pressed by the lips the teeth of the smoker may also assist in closing the jaws and cause the device to retain a firm hold on the cigar it being noticed that the flaring rear terminals prevent the teeth in position in the month between the teeth and lips.

2 and 3 are integral, they being connected at their rear ends by the plate 9 in which is a perforation 10 for drawing the smoke therethrough, said aws having a certain resiliency for closin g pun poses, but being adapted to be pressed by the lips and teeth of the smoker, so as to properly envelop the portion of the cigar that they surround, and be firmly clamped upon said portion. r

In Figs. 6 and 7, the jaws have rearward extensions 11 in which are draft perforations or holes 12,'the extensions in Fig. 6 being of the form of knuckles 13 through which the pintle 14 is past as the axis of the jaws. In Fig. 7, the sides'15 of the rear portions of the jaws overlap so as to move one on the other in the closing and opening of the jaws, said sides having connected with them the axial pintle 16 of, the jaws, the results of operation, however, in said Figs. 5, 6, and 7 being similar to that in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4.

In Fig. 8, the heel ends of the jaws are of i the form of tongues-17 which are adapted to be fitted to each other by sliding one on the other and so interlock, thus connecting said ends and consequently the jaws, allowing the latter to be somewhat resilient, and close and open, and thus be operative as in the previous. constructions;

the sides-of the jaws adjacent to their places of connection being cut away adapting the lips of the smoker to embrace the exposed portion of the tobacco, while the rear portions of the aws are in the mouth.
