CIGAR-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J 11116 13, 1916.
Application filed April 21, 1915. Serial No. 22,809.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL G. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved cigar holder having movably mounted therein, a grapple or jaws adapted to engage the cigar while projected and then to be drawn into the holder to securely hold the cigar attached thereto.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view showing the cigar holder with a cigar attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a view partly in plan and partly in vertical section showing the improved holder; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line m m on Fig. 2, some parts being shown in full; Fig. 4: is a view looking at the tip end of the holder; and Fig; 5 is a view looking at the open, or bowl end of the holder.
The cigar is indicated by the character 3 The cigar holder 2 is of the usual construction, except as hereinafter noted. The bowl or cigar receptacle 3 may be of the ordinary size,'but the axial draft passage l of the holder is enlarged, and is provided with a radial notch 5 at the tip or mouthpiece end of the holder.
The grapple, has preferably three spring jaw 6 provided at their outer extremities with sharp barbs 7, and at their inner extremities formed integral with a tubular Copies of this patent may be obtained for stem 8 that is mounted to slide in the draft passage 4 that is provided at one side of its end with an outwardly bent lug 9. The lug 9 engages the extremity of the notch 5 to limit the movement of the grapple in an outward direction. Vhen the grapple is projected as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the end of the cigar may be inserted between the barbs thereof. When the grapple is then drawn inward into the positions indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 3, the cigar will be very securely held in the holder, so that it cannot be accidentally dropped out. The stem 8 of the grapple is tubular, and
hence, does not interfere with the draftv through the holder; When the grapple is in its indrawn position, the lug 9 alines with the flanged tip or mouth-piece of the holder. The device described is of very small cost,
may be easily applied to a cigar holder, and
is very efiicient for the purposes had in view.
Obviously, the invention above described may, of course, be applied to a cigarette holder.
What I claim is:
A cigar holder having a notch in one side of its tip, in combination with a grapple having a tubular stem mounted to slide axially in the draft passage of said holder,
provided at its tip end with a lug working in the notch of said holder and closing the same in one position of said tubular stem, and provided at its other end with a plus rality of spring prongs movable into and out of the bowl of said holder and terminating in inturned barbs.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
