PATENTED SEPT. l2, 1905.
W. WHITE.
CIGAR PBRFORATOR.
APPLICATION FILED JUNB17,1905.
IIIIII.. lllll'll' l'lillllilv'lllll VVILLARD WHITE, OF EVANSTON, ILLINOIS.
ClGAR-PERFORATOR- A Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
Application filed June 17, 1905. Serial No. 265,655.
To all whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLARD WHITE, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing in Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cigar-Cutters, which I have designated the no-nicotine cigar-cutter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cigar-cutters designed to prepare the proper end of the cigar to be taken between the lips of the smoker ready for smoking.
The object of the invention is to punch a hole laterally through the cigar at such end, leaving the point of the cigar at 'that end intact. I attain this by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my new and improved cigar-cutter. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the end of the cutter, showing its roughened surface. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the cutter, showing it secured upon a base.
Like letters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, A is a hollow cylinder having the ledges a and formed within it at the extremities of its longer section.
B is a tube so formed as to be telescoped in the cylinder. The tube contains the coiled spring C.
D is a hollow perforator extending through the tube B from its outer end a little way beyond its inner end, and it is beveled to a sharp point at its inner end.
Through the cylinder A the transverse converging aperture E is made.
F is a cylinder formed with the shouldersf, So as to rest upon the shoulders c, formed in the shorter section of the cylinder A. The inner end of the cylinder F is made to conform to the converging aperture E in the cylinder A, and the cylinder F is made movable in the cylinder A on the line of the longitudinal axis of the same. The aperture E is made converging in order that it may fit the conical end of a cigar, and the movable cylinder F is designed to vary the diameter of the aperture to iit cigars of different sizes.
The perforator D is madehollow, so that the tobacco can be cleaned out of it. This can be done by any suitable devicev of wellknown construction, as any needle-shaped instrument.
The operation of the cutter is as follows: The ends of the cutter are held between the thumb and lingers of one hand, while the other hand inserts the conical end of the cigar in the aperture E. The ends are pressed, the cylinder F, movinginward, adjusts the aperture E so as 'to lit the cigar, and at the same time the tube B moves into the cylinder A, and thus forces the perforator through the cigar, the pressure is relaxed, and the coiled spring C returns the tube to its original position and the cigar is released and has been thus prepared for smoking, the perforations so made furnishing the needed circulation of air through the cigar to make it easily smokable.
As shown in Fig. 4, a cutter may be secured by any suitable means vertically upon a counter with its larger end downward to serve as a iixture in a cigar-store. For such use it will be made of any suitable size. For pocket use the cutter will be made, kof course, quite small, and it may be made of such size and fitted with a ring or other means for attaching it so as to be worn on a watch-chain as a charm.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, ish
l. A cigar-cutter consisting of the combination, of the hollow cylinder A, having in it the converging aperture, E, the tube, B, telescoped in said cylinder, the coiled spring, O,
in the tube, the perforator, D, secured in the tube, and the cylinder', F, movable in the cylinder A, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
2. In a cigar-cutter, the combination of the cylinder, A, having the converging aperture, E,formed therein, and having the small ledges, c, formed in its shorter section, the tube, B, telescoped in the cylinder, A, the spring, O, the perforator, D, and the movable cylinder F, having its inner end made so as to conform to the converging shape of the aperture E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of June, A.D. 1905.
WILLARD WHITE. [L s] Witnesses:
GEO. C. GRAY, WM. R. BURLEIGH.
