HOLDER FOR LIGHTED CIGARS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VVILLIAM F. Mc- MANUs, citizen of the United States, residing at Shawnee, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Lighted Cigars, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a receptacle or holder for lighted cigars or cigarettes, and has as its primary aim to obviate the necessity of throwing away a freshly lighted cigar or cigarette when entering a building in which smoking is prohibited, or when other conditions arise under which the smoker wishes to temporarily discontinue the consumption of the cigar or cigarette.

More specifically speaking, it is the object of the invention to provide a receptacle or holder for lighted cigars and cigarettes into which the cigar or cigarette may be readily introduced and, being of non-combustible material, may be placed within ones pocket without liability of injury to the clothing.

It is a further aim of the invention to provide, in a receptacle of the class described, a supporting member for the cigar or cigarette so constructed that the cigar tip-receiving portion of the supporting member will be entirely independent and separate from the cigarette tip-receiving portion thereof so that the aroma from a cigar will not be imparted to a cigarette, and vice versa.

Still another aim of the invention is to so construct the receptacle that the cigar or cigarette disposed therewithin will be firmly supported, without injury, and spaced from the walls of the receptacle.

Further the invention contemplates so constructing the supporting member for the cigar or cigarette that it will destroy or cut off the draft therethrough and thereby cause the fire to quickly die out.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the device, the same being illustrated as arranged for the support of a cigar. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.

In the drawing the numeral 1 indicates the body of the receptacle and 2 the closure therefor. Both the body and closure, or cap, are made of asbestos, or some other noncombustible material and each is of tubular form and closed at one end and open at the other end. It is preferable that the walls of the body and cap be relatively thin so that the receptacle will be light in weight, and may be carried in ones pocket Without inconvenience.

As illustrated in the drawing, the cap or closure 2 is to be fitted into the open end of the body 1 and in order that the movement of the cap into the body may be limited, the cap is increased in thickness, as indicated at 3 throughout a portion of its length, whereby a circumscribing shoulder 4 is formed between its open and closed ends designed to abut against the edge of the open end of the body 1.

The cigar and cigarette supporting memher is preferably molded from hard hubber and is illustrated as consisting essentially of a cylindrical body 5 of a diameter to fit within the cap 2, snugly, but not so tightly as to prevent its removal and re-insertion.

The body 5 is formed at one end with a cigar tip-receiving socket 6 which is flared at the end of the body as at 7 so as to permit of the ready insertion of the tip of a cigar therein and inwardly of its flared end 7, the socket 6 is gradually tapered so that its wall will snugly embrace the inserted tip of the cigar. In addition to the socket 6, the body 5 is formed with a socket 8 which is of a contour to snugly receive the tip end of a cigarette, the open end of the socket 8 being, however, flared as at 9 so as to permit of the ready insertion of the said tip.

From the foregoing description of the invention, and from an inspection of the drawing it will be observed that the supporting member 5 is removably fitted into the cap or closure 2 and that after removal it may be reversed and re-inserted so that either of the sockets provided therein may be presented toward the open end of the said closure, thereby adapting the device for the insertion of a cigar or cigarette. It will also be apparent that inasmuch as the supporting member is of hard rubber, it may be removed and sterilized whenever found necessary or desirable. It will furthermore be noted that the sockets for receiving the cigar or cigarette tips are out of communication with each other and that each socket is closed so that upon the insertion of a cigar or cigarette tip into the socket designed for its reception, draft through the cigar or cigarette will be out OK and the same will soon become extinguished. It will also be evident by reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing that whether the article supported be a cigar or cigarette, the lighted end there- .of will be supported in spaced relation to the walls of the body 1, and consequently, the

interior surface of the body will not be liable to become coated with ashes.

to provide an ash receiving recess between the adjacent end thereof and the open end of the cap and having longitudinally extending sockets formed in its ends, the said sockets being closed at their inner ends and terminating at their inner extremities in spaced relation to each other, the said, cap forming a closure for the socket disposed adjacent the closed end thereof.
