7 .9 E I f' WTNESSES im [N VEN T OR UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
LEON-RIGGS, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
'roBAcco-PIPE smic.
To all whom. 'it may concern: y
Be it known that I, LEON Rises, a citizen of the United States, residing at 210 North Twenty-first street, in the city of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Ilmprovement inv Tobacco-PipeStems, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n pipe-stems by means of which the user thereof, while smoking an inferior quality of tobacco may obtain the flavor of a superior quality. I obtain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in whichl Figure 1 is a side view of the pipe-stem, Fig. 2 is avertical section of the pipe-stem, and Fig. 3 isa side view showing the stem 1n use in a pipe.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The pipe-stem is made of metal and cylindrical in shape, the walls being only of suficient thickness to insure solidity. There is `a small hole at the end E and also at the end F, and the end F is attened suitable for use as a mouthpiece. The stem is in two sections A and B, one of which slides over the other for a short distance, forming the joint Gr. The end E of the section A is inserted into the bowl (H) of a pipe in the ordinary manner. The stem is then opened at the Vjoint G, and a cigar placed inside the stem. This cigar is first prepared for use by having a small hole drilled through it from end to end so that it may draw freely. The bowl', I-I, of the pipe is then lled with smoking tobacco, the tobacco lighted, and the pipe smoked in the usual manner. The smoke in passing through the pipe-stem is compelled to pass through the cigar, C, and will acquire the flavor of said cigar ir- Specication of Letters Patent.

respective of the flavor of the tobacco being burned in the bowl of the pipe. The same cigar may be left in the stem and used a number of times.
If preferred, vthe pipe-stem may be used without the bowl, Il, for the purposes of a cigar-holder, enabling the cigar therein to be smoked in wet or windy weather Without being affected thereby. To use it in this mannel` the cigar should be first lighted and then placed in the stem.
When used as a cigar-holder the cigar which is to be smoked should have a few small cuts, D, made in its mouth end and should not have any hole extending through it.
I am aware that prior to my invention pipe-stems containing various receptacles have been made. I therefore do not claim such invention broadly, but
What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a pipe, the combination with the bowl having a combustion chamber and an opening communicating with said chamber, of a stem for said pipe, said stem comprising a tobacco roll holder portion, a cap member fitting on the end of said holder and having a reduced end for engagement in the open;
ing in the bowl, and a roll of tobacco cen- Patented Apr. 11,1911. l
trally perforated contained in the chamber y formed by the holder and cap to facilitate the passage of the smoke from the combustion chamber therethrough.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.F
LEON RIGGS.
