SMVOKERS-PIPE'.
SPECIFICATION forming part 'Of Letters Patent NO. 6 1,689, dated June 12,1900.
Application filed February 26, 1900. SerialNo. 6,542. (No model.)
The purpose of this invention is to provide a smokers pipe which will evenly'distribute the smoke in the mouth of the'user, not com centrating it upo'n the point of the tongue, as in the ordinary form, and which willalso pre- AIS vent the entry of liquid charged with nicotin into the smokers mouth.
1 This specification is the disclosure of one form of the invention ,while the claims define the actual scope thereof, 3
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar character's-of reference indicate corresponding parts inall theviews.
Figure 1 is a sectional view-"of the inven- Fig. -2 is a section on theline 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section onthe line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The bowl .a of the pipe is joined, as usual, to a stem formed in two parts I) and c, the latter being preferably integral with the bowl and the former having a nipple b, removably fastened-in the outer end of a chamber. 0' in the section 0 of the stem. The interior of the bowl a communicates with the chamber 0 of the stem by way of preferably two small passages a. [By providingtwo passages "they may be made smaller in diameter than iflene cation with the atmosphere.
passage were employed, and the advantage of this .is that the tobacco is caused to burn evenly in the pipe and prevented from being drawn intothe stem, at the same time inno way aifecting the proper operation of the parts. The stem-section c has two small orifices c placing the chamber 0'. in communi- By these means a small quantity of atmospheric air is drawn smoke when it is drawn into the mouth of the smoker. The stem-section b has an enlarged cavity in its upper end to receive the tubular valve-seat d of the mouthpiece-d, which valve-seat serves also to fasten the mouth piece to thestem. In the valveseat d operates a ball-valve 6, serving to admit the passage of the smoke to the mouthpiece, but preventing'the breath from entering the smokepassage, thereby avoiding the condensation of the moisture in the pipe-stem. The passage in the mouthpiece d instead of opening longitudinally of the mouthpiece is turned upward at its discharge end and opens at the side of the mouthpiece, and this upturned end of the bore of the'mouthpiece is covered by a of the smokerstongue, which disadvantage is'well known to exist in pipes previously constructed and results in injuring the tongue. The plate (1 also prevents the saliva from entering the stem of the pipe. p s
It may be understood that with the con- 3 struction'here disclosed the saliva and condensed vapors resulting both from the mois ture in the tobacco and from discharges at the mouth of the smoker will not be drawn back into the smokers mon th laden with nicos tin, as is usually the case. The pipe 'will thus be kept clean and non-odorous, andthe smoker will fully enjoy the tobacco without the usual inconveniences of smoking.-
Having thus described myinvention, I r
claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- 1. A mouthpiece for smokers instruments,
the passage of which is turned to discharge laterally from the mouthpiece, and a'distributer-plat'e fastened rigidly to the mouthpiece and located over the discharge end of said passage, to deflect the smoke.
2. In a smokers instr "ment;the combina-' 'tion of a stem, a mouthpiece, a tubular valveseat secured to one of said pair-ts end fastened In testimony whereof I have signed my in the other, whereby to join said parts to-' name to this specification in the presence of to 'gether. and a'valve'carried in the valveseat.
