Description
D. FOLEY.
, Cigar Shaped Smoken No. 43,906f.... 'Patented Aug. 23, 1864.
N, PETERS4 Phowmhogmphar. wmhingwn. D. C. v
STATES NITE PATENT OFFICE.
D. D. FOLEY, OF VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IIVIPROVED CIGARfSHAPED SMOKER.
To @ZZ whom, it mfc/.y concern.:
Be it known that I, D. D. FOLEY, of the city of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipes or Tobacco-Smokers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure lis a perspective view of my tobaccosmoker. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the external shell of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of both the external shell or ease and the inclosed pipebowl or receptacle for the tobacco.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing a smoker that in external appearance it shall resemblea cigar, and in'internal arrangementshall consist of an interior chamber or pipe-bowl to contain the tobacco, surrounded by a space between it and the external case, in which will be gathered the saliva, Sto., which may pass down through the tube ofthe smoker. y
That others may understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will describe it more particularly.
A is the outer case or shell, made of any suitable material, and in form resembling a cigar. This case may be very properly made of wood, and will then possess the requisite lightness and beauty of finish.
B is the interior bowl or tobacco-chamber, and may properly be made of clay or any other4 suitable material. It is somewhat smaller than the interior of the case A, and contact of surfaces is prevented by several little studs or projections, b b b b, upon the outside of the bowl B. At its larger end it may be provided with a ange, as in Fig. 2, and it tightly into the lower end of the outer case; or it may be maintained in position by a screw-cap, as in Fig. 3, or by any other mode of attachment.
D is a cover or lid closing the mouthof the bowl B.
F is the smoke-tube, through which the smoke from the burning tobacco is drawn into the mouth. The lid `D is provided with a number of draft-holes, through which the air is drawn to maintain combustion.
The interior bowl, B, having been charged with tobacco it is lighted in the usual manner. The lid D may then be closed, if desired, and the operation of smoking performed in the usual manner of smoking a cigar. If thebowl B is made of clay, it will not be affected by the action of the re within, and the air-space E will prevent the outer case, A," from becoming excessively heated. The saliva, instead of descending to the tobacco inthe bowl B, will remain'in the annular space E, where also will be received the poisonous nicotine or oil produced by the combustion of the tobacco, which, if the tube F entered the bowl, would in some lmeasure be carried into the mouth with the smoke.
If desirable, a wet spongeV may be -inserted in the upper end of the space E, so that the smoke will be compelled to pass throughv it, and be thereby cooled and furtherdeprived of its poisonous oil. The sponge may also be perfumed or moistened with any aromatic substance that will impart an agreeable flavor to the smoke.
' Among the advantages secured by my invention may be mentioned the compact and convenient form of the smoker and more perfeet separation of the smoke from the saliva than in ordinary pipes.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-' The construction of a' cigar-shaped smoker -with an external shell or case, A, containing a long bowl or tobacco-chamber, B, supported and held in place by the small studs or pro- `)'ections b b b b, so as to leave a space around it, combined and arranged substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
D. D. FOLEY.
