To all whom it may concern:

Be itv known that I, WILLIAM WESTEN- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corona, in the county of Roberts and State of South Dakota, have invented certain useful Improvements in Smoking- Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

The invention relates to smoking pipes, and has for its primary object to provide a pipe of this character wherein thebowl thereof for containing the tobacco is of novel form so as to avoid the wasting of the tobacco or the falling of the same there-- from when the pipe is used or at rest upon a support. I

Another object of the invention is the provision of a pipe wherein the construction thereof will avoid the blowing of ashes into the face of the user thereof when sub jected to strong winds and also the fire in the burning of the tobacco will be retained to avoid the flying of sparks in the smoking of the pipe.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a pipe of this character where in the bowl construction thereof will permit the reception of a maximum quantity of tobacco and in the smoking of the pipe the nicotin will be trapped therein so as to avoid the choking of the stem or mouthpiece of the pipe and the swallowing of the nicotin while in the act of smoking the pipe.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a pipe of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly sanitary and clean at all times, reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.

Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of ele* ments and arrangement of parts which will he exemplified in construction hereinafter described, andthe scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claim.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawing. Referring to the drawing in detail, A deslgnates generally the bowl, B the stem and C the mouthpiece of the smoking pipe hereinafter fully described in detail. I

The bowl A is formed with a tobacco charging chamber 5 which opens through the front or forward end of said bowl, while the top of the bowl is provided with an air intake port or opening 6 communieating with the chamber 5, the chamber 5 being filled with tobacco through the open end thereof, and said tobacco is lighted through the port or opening 6. This bowl at its bottom is provided with a rest 7 so that the pipe, when not in use, can be placed upon a support for the standing of the same thereon without possibility of the toppling over or upsetting of the pipe when at rest.

The open end of the chamber 5 in the bowl 6 is closed through the medium of a cap or closure member 8 which is of a shape corresponding to the cross sectional shape of the bowl A and is swingingly supported upon a pivot 9 which is securely mounted in the bowl. On the said bowl A is formed a stop 10, against which abuts the cap or closure member 8 when closed so that the latter is restricted in its closing movement, the stop 10 being located at a lower point on the bowl so that on closing movement of the cap or closure member 8 it will rest upon the stop and there will be no possibility of the accidental opening movement thereof so that the tobacco will be retained in the chamber 5 without the possibility of Waste or the falling of the tobacco therefrom when the pipe is being smoked or at rest.

The stem B is formed with a well or reservoir 11 through the inner closed end of which communicates a passage 12 which leads from the inner closed end of the chamber 5 within the bowl A, and into this passage is introduced a draft tube 13 which is readily removable from said passage for cleaning purposes, and in the smoking of the pipe draftis had through the tube 13 which protrudes through the well or reservoir 11, into the outer and of which is fitted a removable mouthaeeaore piece i l, the sanieheing formed with anout- Wardly tapered bore or passage 15 WlllCll opens through opposite ends of the mouthpiece and is located centrally thereof, the

tube 13 being also protruded into the bore or passage 13 so that the smoke will travel into the mouth of the user or the pipe through the mouthpiece 14, as usual, and on the drawing of nicotin from the chamber 5 the same flows from tnetuhe l3 and drops into the Well or reservoir 11 for the collection thereof at this point. Upon the removal GfyllQ mouthpiece lithe nicotin and other matter collected within the Well orreserroir 11 can be extracted therefrom for the thorough cleaning of the pipe. Also, the tube 13 can he removed for the cleaning thereof should the same beconie cholre'd or unsanitary.

It is of course to he understood that the invention is not restricted to the use of materials, shape of the component parts, the size of the chamber 5 and Well 11, nor the length of the tube 18 or any other detail proportions, pans and minor arrangements, as changes,yariations, modifications may he made such as come properly ithin thescope ot' the appended claims Without departing from the spirit of the in enti on or sacrificing any of its advantages. 1

Having thus described my invention, I claim:
