Description

Patented May 14, 1929.
PATRICK JoI-In' WHELAN, or RENFREW, oN'rARIo; CANADA;
SMOKING PIPE.
Application filed August 4, 1928. Serial No. 297,467.
This invention relates to improvements in tobacco pipes and the objects of the invention are to provide a tobacco pipe of simple construction in which no nicotine or saliva will be conveyed through the stem to the mouth of the user. p
A "further object is to provide a pipe of this description that canbe manufactured and placed on the market at a very reasonable price. a
A still further object is to provide a dry to bacco pipe that can be readily cleaned and in which any accmnulation of nicotine and saliva may be easily discharged from the bowl.
- lVith these and other objects hereinafter more fully referred to, the novel features of the invention consist in the combination with a pipe bowl formed with an opening in the base, oi a tunnel member adapted to fit within the bowl in spaced relationship to the base and formed with a hollow stem extending theretln'ough, the stem being provided with a detachable cap. I
Referring to the drawings in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure, 1
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in sectionot' my improved tobacco pipe.
Figure 2 is an enlargel sectional detail of the tunnel or nicotine collecting member fitted in the pipe bowl. I
Figure 3 is a perspective detail of the tune nel or nicotine collecting member detached from the pipe.
Figure 4 is a perspective detail of the combined cap andsleeve for the funnel member.
Figure 5 is a side elevation partly in section of a modified form of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings in which an example of the invention is disclosed, A designates the smoking pipe as a whole comprising the bowl 10 and stem 11 with mouthpiece 12, the usual bore 13 being formed in the stem and communicating with the bowl 10. The bottom of the bowl is provided with an opening or hole 14 to engage with a funnel or nicotine collecting member 16, hereinafter more fully described.
The bowl may be of any-well known construction and in the present example is of inexpensive make. WVithin the bowl is fitted the "tunnel member 16 comprising, as here shown, a saucer-shaped head portion 17 provided with spaced orifices 18, the under side of the head being convex as at 19. Integral with'the head portion 17 is a hollow cylindrical stem 20 for engagement with the reservoir 15 in the pipe bowl 10 and provided with a flared end 21 slotted as at 22 to engage with a combined reservoir and cap '15. The cap is slotted at the top as at'24 to provide adjustable means for retaining it securely on the stem 20. The saucer-shaped head 17 convex on the under side, when in position within the bowl of the pipe, will automatically provide a space 23 between the head and the bottomof the bowl and communicating directly with the bore 13 in the stem 11.
;It will thus be seen that whenthevpipe is used, the smoke will be drawn through the perforations 18 in the member 16 through the space or chamber 23 and through the stem 11, while the chamber 23 provides a space at the bottom of the bowl wherein nicotine and saliva may accumulate and from which they As many changescould be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the'accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
WVhat I claim as my invention is In a pipe of the character described and in combination a bowl having an opening in the base, a funnel member withinthe bowl extending through the open ng therein and comprising a saucer-shaped head portion having orifices therein and adapted to enstein being slightly flared and slotted and the gage with the sides of the bowl to provide a outer end of the combined cap and reservoir 10 space betwen said head and the bottom of the being slotted to provide adjustable retaining bowl, a hollow stein integral with said head means for the latter on the stem.
and engaging with the opening in the bowl, In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my and a combined reservoir and cap adjustable hand.
for engagement with said stem and operable from without the bowl, the lower end of the PATRICK JOHN XVI-IELAN,
