CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates particularly to means for separating nicotin from tobaccosinoke in pipes, and preventing saliva from entering the bore of the pipe-stem and thus reaching the bowl of the pipe.
The present invention constitutes a modification of the invention disclosed in -my application No. 475,050 led of even date herewith.
My primary object is to provide a construction of pipe-stem and nicotin-collector adapted for connection with a pipe-bowl which is formed without a stem, the invention being particularly applicable to briar and corn-cob pipes.
lThe invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a sectional view of a pipe constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevational view showing the mouth-piece and a nicotin-collector carried thereby detached or withdrawn from the pipe-stem; and Fig. 3, a perspective view showing the pipe-stem parts and the nicotin-collector.
In the construction illustrated, A represents a pipe-bowl; B, a stem for the pipe; C, the mouth-piece; D, a tubular nipple connecting the mouthpiece and stem; and E, a nicotin-collector connected to the mouthpiece through the medium of the nipple D. The pipe-bowl A is formed with the usual chamber 1 for tobacco and has extending through one of its walls near its base a perforation 2 adapted to receive the pipestem. rIhe pipe-ste1n B preferably comprises an inner tubular section 3 which tapers externally, as shown, and which has its inner end projecting into the bowl of the pipe; and an outer section 4 removably connected with the section` 3 by means of screw connection. The pipe-stem has a straight, smooth bore 5 which extends entirely through it, the inner section 3 being open at both ends. The upper wall of the inner section 3 is provided with perforations 6, which afford communication between the Specification of Letters Patent.

chamber 1 of the pipe-bowl and the bore 5 of the stem. The mouthepiece C is formed with a saliva-chamber 7 from which leads a passage 8 which extends through the tip of the mouth-piece. The nipple D comprises an inner end-portion 9, which has slip-joint connection with the outer end of the section 4 of the stem, an outer end-portion 10 which is externally threaded and connected with the base-end of the mouthpiece which is correspondingly internally threaded, and an external flange, or collar, 11 which is located about centrally with `relation to the nipple. The nipple has a bore 12 of the same diameter as the bore 5 of the stem. The device E comprises preferably a rod 13 equipped with disks 14 provided with minute perforations, or smoke-passages 15; an extension 16 at the end of the rod 13, which is located in the inner end-portion of the section 3 of the pipe-stein and which has its upper portion cut away as indicated at 17 and dished out to form a pan located beneath the perforations 6, the end-portion of the member 1G being left in the form of a disk 1S which forms a plug for the inner end of the tubnl ar member 3 of the stem; a shank 19 which extends through the nipple D and carries the rod 13, said shank having a longitudinal groove 2O in its upper portion which affords a smoke passage through the nipple D; and a saliva-deiiector, or separator, 21 carried by the upper portion of the outer end of the shank 19 and provided in its upper portion with a longitudinal groove 22 which forms a continuation of, but is offset from, the groove 20. The outer end of the shank 19 is enlarged as indicated at 23, thus affording a shoulder 24 which abuts against the outer end of the nipple D. Adjacentto the shoulder 24, the shank 19 is enlarged somewhat and threaded, and the interior of the adjacent end of the nipple D is correspondingly threaded to aiford screw connec tion between the parts. The member 21 is curved slightly lengthwise to conform to the upper wall of the chamber 7 of the inouthpiece. v
The manner of use will be readily understood. In the use of the pipe, the smoke is drawn through the passages 6 into the bore 5 of the pipe-stem and thence through the minute perforations 15 of the disks14, thence through the passages 2O and 22 into the mouth-piece. In the passage of the smoke, the nicotin is for the most part separated and collected in the pan 16 and on the disks 14. Any saliva which may enter the mouthpiece will be received in the chamber 7 beneath the saliva-separator 2l, and the saliva will thus be prevented from passing into the bore of the pipe-stem and thence to the pipebowl. Then desired, the mouth-piece and nipple may be withdrawn from the pipestem t-hrough the medium of the mouthpiece, leaving the parts in the condition shown in F ig. 2. In the withdrawal operation, the disks of the nicot-in-collector, which are of substantially the same diameter as the bore of the pipe-stem, serve to scrape the inner wall of the pipe-steln. The user may hold the device through the medium of the mouth-piece and cleanse and wipe the nicotin collector. Thereafter, if desired, the mouth-piece may be separated from the nipple and the nipple slipped off over the disks of the nicotin-collector, enabling the passages 20 and 22 to be cleansed. IVhen desired, the pipe-stem may be withdrawn from the bowl to enable the inner end of the pipestem and the bowl to be cleansed.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom.
