Description

G. W. CONLEY.
SMOKING PIPE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY I. 1918.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
2&2.
G-W- CONLEY better understood,
GEORGE W. GONLEY, 0F WHEA'ION, ILLINOIS.
SMOKING-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Application filed July 1, 1918. Serial No. 242,801.
'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CoNLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheaton, in the count of Dupage and lState of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in smoking pipes and it is an object of the invention to provide a pipe having novel and improved means whereby a cool, dry smoke is assured together with a novel and improved stem which serves to prevent the accumulation of moisture therein, either saliva from the smokers mouth or nicotin from the tobacco.
The invention consists inv the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved smoking pipe whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
- The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that m inventionmay be the will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a pipe constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2'2 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanymg drawings 3 denotes the bowl of a pipe having the bore of the stem 20 in communication therewith at a point above the bottom of the bowl. The outer. end portion of the bore of the stem 20 is enlarged as indicated at 21 to provide a collecting chamber for saliva or the like. Fittin within the bore of the stem 20 and exten ing from the inner end thereof to the enlarged portion 21 is a tubular linin or sleeve 22 opened at both ends and which linin or sleeve 22 serves to prevent the stem from absorb- .ing nicotin, and which also facilitates an effective cleansing of the stem S.
Snugly fitting within the lining or sleeve 22 is a tubular member 23 formed preferably of metaland which is of such a length, when in applied position, as to extend within the enlarged portion 21 of the bore of the stem 20. The inner end 24 of the tubular member 23 is closed, and said inner end terminates substantially flush with the interior wall of the bowl B and is provided adjacent its top portion with the restricted openings 25 through which the smoke is adapted to be drawn. By having the inner end 24; of the member 23 closed with the restricted openings 25 provided adjacent the top ortion of said end 24, it will be perceived t at when the fire burns the tobacco down even with the openings 25, the pipe will go out, and there will be left in the bottom of the bowl some tobacco that the fir'e has not burned, and when the ashes or burned tobacco is emptied from the bowl, the unburned tobacco left in the bottom of the bowl will also fall out, and thus maintain the pipe clean and fresh and free of a wet heel as is often formed in pipes of the general type.
It will also beself-evident that the lining or sleeve 22 facilitates the insertion or removal of the tubular member 23, and in order to facilitate the cleansing of the member 23, I find it of advantage to provide the same with a longitudinally disposed slot a.
After the member 23 has been withdrawn from applied position, the interior of the member 23 may be thoroughly cleansed by running water or with-a cleaner andwithout the necessity of removing the member 23 from the extension 27 of the mouth piece 26.
26 denotes a mouth piece engaged with the outer end portion of the stem 20 and provided with a reduced extension 27 extending within the enlarged portion 21 of the bore of the stem 20 and telescopically engaging the open end portion of the tubular member 23 or that portion of the member 23 within the enlarged portion 21 of the bore of the stem 20. The extension 27 is of such a length as to terminate in advance of the inner end of the enlarged portion 21 and intermediate the outer end of the extension 27 and the inner end of the enlarged portion 21, the upper or top ortion of the tubular portion 23 is provided with a restricted opening 28 through which the smoke is drawn into the enlarged portion or collecting chamber 21.-
The mouth piece 26 is provided with a bore or passage 29 partially continuing within the extension 27 and in communication With an opening or port 30 transversely of the extension 27 and in communication at opposite ends With the enlarged portion or collecting chamber 21 so that the smoke Will be drawn through the bore or passage 29 of the mouth piece 26 substantially free of saliva or nicotin from the tobacco.
The induction orifice of the bore or passage 29 of the mouth piece 26 opens at the top of said mouth piece so that a less amount of saliva will enter said bore 0r passage. Such saliva as may pass into the bore or passage 29 Will be discharged Within the enlarged portion 21 of the bore of the stem through the depending end portion of the port 30 While the smoke entering Within the enlarged portion-2l through the restricted opening 28 Will be drawn through the upper portion of the port 30 through the bore or assage 29 into the mouth of the smoker.
rom the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a pipe constructed in accordance With my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility With Which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modifica' tion "without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A smoking pipe including a bowl and stem, the outer end portion of the bore of the stem being enlarged, a tubular member arranged Within the bore of the stem and partially extending Within the enlarged portion of the bore, the inner end of said tubular member being closed and provided with a restricted opening, the upper portion of the tubular member extending Within the enlarged portion of the bore being provided With a restricted opening, and a removable mouth piece closing the outer end of the tubular member, said mouth piece being provided With a reduced extension disposed Within the outer end portion of the tubular member, said extension being provided therethrough' with a transverse port in communication with the passage of the mouth piece.
2. A smoke pipe including a bowl and a stem, the outer end portion of the bore of the stem being enlarged, a tubular member arranged Within the bore of the stem and partially extending Within the enlarged por tion o1 the bore, and a removable mouthpiece closing the outer end of the tubular member, said mouth-piece being provided With a reduced extension disposed Within the outer end portion of the tubular member, said extension being provided therethrough with a transverse port in communication With the passage of the mouthpiece and With the enlarged portion of the bore of the stem.
3. A smoke pipe including a bowl and a stem, the outer end portion of the bore of the stem being enlarged, a tubular member arranged Within the bore of the stem and partially extending Within the enlarged portion of the bore, the inner end of said tubular member being closed and provided With a restricted opening, the upper portion of the tubular member extending Within the enlarged portion of the bore being provided Witha restricted opening, and a removable mouth-piece closing the outer end of the tubular member, said mouth-piece being provided "With a reduced extension disposed within the outer end portion of the tubular member, said extension being provided therethrough with a transverse port in communication with the passage of the mouthpiece, said tubular member being provided With a longitudinally disposed slot.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE V7, CONLEY.
