TOBACCO-PIPE STEM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN S. HARBAGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipe Stems, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in tobacco pipe stems, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character in which the saliva or moisture will be collected in or enter a moisture chamber or tube, while the pipe is in use, thus preventing the tobacco from becoming damp or soggy and also preventing the obnoxious juices from entering the mouth of the smoker.
Another object of the invention is to provide a moisture tube integral with the pipe stem. or body, said moisture tube having a mouthpiece formed integral therewith and projecting therefrom beyond the end of the pipe stem or body, said moisture tube and mouthpiece being a continuation of one another.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pipe stem comprising a stem proper or body having an integral moisture tube on the underside, from which projects the mouthpiece, the chambers of the pipe stem proper and moisture tube being in communication through a duct adjacent the outer end of the stem proper or body and entering the moisture tube between the moisture chamber and the mouthpiece, the outer end of the pipe stem being closed by a plug or closure constructed to open or close the duct.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a pipe stem consisting of a stem proper or body open at both ends, an integral tube for forming a moisture tube and mouthpiece, said tube being open at both ends, a plug or closure for closing the outer end of the stem proper or body, and another closure or plug for closing the inner end of the integral tube, thereby providing 2, normally closed moisture chamber which may be readily opened for cleaning said chamber.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation of a pipe showing my improved pipe stem construction.
Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view thereof; and
Fig. 3, is an enlarged side elevation of the closure or plug for the outer end of the pipe stem body showing the construction whereby the duct may be opened and closed.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied 2 represents a pipe bowl which may be of any desirable construction and config uration, and to which is attached the pipe stem 3 in any suitable and well known manner. The pipe stem consists of a stem proper or body 4 having a smoke channel 5 running longitudinally therethrough and open at both ends. With the stem proper or body a is integrally formed the tube 6, the inner end of which forms a moisture tube 7 and the outer end a mouthpiece 8 which is a continuation of the moisture tube and projects therefrom beyond the outer end of the stem proper or body at. In this tube is formed a smoke channel 9 open at both ends and preferably increasing in size toward the inner end to form a moisture chamber 10. The chambers in the stem proper or body and the tube are in communication through a duct 11 situated adjacent the outer end of the stem body and the position thereof divides the tube 6 into the mouthpiece and moisture tube. The lower end of the tube 6 is normally closed by a plug or closure 12 which is secured to the tube in any suitable and well known manner, but is preferably screwed therein as here shown. The outer end of the stem proper or body 4 is normally closed by a plug or closure 13 which is secured to the body in any suitable manner, but said plug is preferably provided with threads 14 for engaging threads 15 in the body, so that said plug may be screwed home and will not he accidentally displaced. The inner end of the plug 13 is beveled or cut away on an angle to form an angular face 16, and when the plug is in position as shown in Fig. 2, the angular face will be re- (Tjh 7 [Evil I moved from the end of the duct 11 and permit the passage of the smoke or moisture from the channel through said duct 11 to the channel 9, but when it is desired to close the duct 11. to shut oil the communication between the channels 5 and 9, the plug 13 is rotated half turn which will dispose the circumference or arcuate portion oi? the in ner end of the plug across oneend of the duct 11, which will eiii'ect'ually close said duct as will be readily understood.
When the pipe is being used for smoking, tl e sinoke will travel through the channel 5, the duct ll and that portion of the channel 9 situated in the mouthpiece out of the outer end of said mouthpiece. iiny saliva or moisture accumulating during the process of smoking Will run down the channel 9 into the moisture chamber 10, here it vvill remain until the closure or plug 12 is rein ved. and When said closure 12 is removed, the moisture in the moisture chamber will run out or a suitable swab cleaner may be inserted in the tube 6 for thoroughly cleaning the channel.
lVhen it is desired. to clean the channel 5 of the stem proper or body, the closure 13 is removed and a cleaner may be then forced through the channel 5 from one end to the other. To prevent any saliva or moisture running from the moisture chamber 10 into the channel 5 of the body and thus impregnating the tobacco in the pipe hole during the time the pipe is not in use, the plug or closure 13 is rotated hall a turn, which will close the duct ll and prevent any saliva or moisture from running into said duct through the channel 5, and when the pipe is to be again used. it is only necessary to turn the closure 13 to the position shown in Fig. 2.
Qt course I do not Wish to be limited to the this patent may be obtained for five m exact details of construction as here shown, as these may be varied Within the limits of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my inven tion, What I claim as new and useful, is-
A tobacco pipe stern consisting of a body having a channel therethrough and open at. both ends, an integral tube formed therewith, a portion of said tube projecting beyond the outer end of the body to form a inoutnpiece; said tube having a channel running theretnrough, the wall between the channels having a duct. formed therein adjacent the outer end of the body and coininunicating with each or" said channels and a plug for closing the outer end of the first named channel, said plug having an angular i acefornied at the inner end and of sufficient length whereby when said plug is turned in one direction, the duct will be opened and When turned in the opposite direction the duct will be closed.
A device of the character stated comprising a bowl, a hollow stem coinniunicating with thebowl and open at its outer cut, a tube in conin'iunic-ation with the stem adjacent the outer end of the latter and a plug having an angular face, said plug being lo ca ed in the outer end of the stem and of su .cient length to project beyond the point of communication between the stem and tube, said plug adapted to be turnedwith the angular face away from said point of communication to close said communication and prevent any moisture of the tube from entering the stem as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto at fiKeCl my signature.
