Description
C. PINKNEY.
SMOKERS PIPE.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 6. m1.
Patented Mar. 5, 1918.
lllllllllllllllllllll I! WITN sass Amman UNITED STATES PATENT o F oE.-
CLEVELAND PINKNEY, OF GEORGETOWN, SOUTH CAROLINA.
SMOKERS' PIPE.
Application filed April 6, 1917.
Th all whom it may cancer-n Be it known that I, CLEVELAND PINKNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Georgetown, in the county of Georgetown and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smokers Pipes, of which the following is a specificat-ion.
This invention comprehends improvements in smokers pipes, and relates more particularly to that class of pipe known as bottom draft, wherein the bowl is provided with a chamber extending entirely therethrough from top to bottom and open at each end.
()ne of the objects of the invention is to provide a pipe of this nature, which in spite of its peculiar construction is not clumsy, and which possesses the same general appearance as pipes of the common type.
Another and more specific object of the invention resides in the provision of a bottom draft pipe having a smoke passage communicating with the tobacco chamber at a point adjacent the top thereof and communicating with the stem passage below the tobacco chamber.
Another and more specific object of the invention is to provide a pipe having a stem opening into the bowl below the tobacco chamber and having its inner end closed by a valve, which may be easily opened to permit of the stem being cleaned either by running Water therethrough or by a cleaner in the usual manner.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pipe.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the pipe.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view showing the construction of the upper end of the smoke passage leading from the tobacco chamber.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the bowl of the pipe, which may be made in any desired shape, and which is formed with a chamber extending entirely therethrough. The upper portion 2 of the bowl chamber forms a tobacco receiving compartment, which is provided at its lower end with a concavo-convex grate Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedMa-LS, 1918 Serial No. 160,225.
3 perforated in any desired manner. The grate rests upon a shoulder 4 formed by contracting the passage through the bowl at its lower end.
Extending longitudinally through thewall of the bowl parallel to the central passage thereof is a smoke flue or passage 5, communicating at its upper end withthe tobacco chamber through the medium of a notch 6, and at its lower end with a smoke passage 7 in the stem 8. A mouth-piece 9 isthreaded into the stem 8.
The inner end of the smoke passage 7, which opens into the bowl below the tobacco chamber is normally closed bya valve. 10 threaded upon the valve rod 11, said rod entending through the wall of the bowl in alinement with the passage 7 and being provided'upon its outer end with a button 12. An expansive helical spring 13 encircles the rod 11 and holds the valve 10 closed when the pipe is being used. 7
A Cover 14 is hinged, as at 15', to a band 16 surrounding the to of the bowl. Thi band is locked in position ,by a depending flange 17 which fits into the vroove in the outer face of the bowl. A clamping wire or ring 18 may be used to secure the flange within the groove if desired. The cover is held closed by a latch 19, but may be easily swung open when desired by means of a lift 20.
Special importance is attached to the arrangement of the valve closing the flue 7, and it is to be noted that when opened a straight passage is provided through which water or a cleaner may be passed to remove accumulations from the stem. It is important for sanitary reasons and essential to the perfect complete enjoyment of a smoke that the stem be kept clean, and this can only be accomplished when means are provided such as shown for running a straight instrument entirely therethrough.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that I have provided a very simple, practical, and attractive bottom draft pipe, having a valve closedstem which may be easily and quickly cleaned when the valve is opened.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention by way of illustration, it will be understood that minor changes in the construction and y bowl formed with a straight smoke passage oipening into'one side of said cavity,a valve s ldably extended through the side ofsaid bowl opposite said stem and having a head within said cavity, and resilient means normally forcing said head against the side of .Said bowl-to close "the end ofsaid smoke passage; said bowl formed with an opening below the inner end ofsaid smoke passage,
a d further formed with a passage having one end openin into said'cavity at a point distinct from t e. first mentioned passage and" having the other end opening into the first mentioned passage intermediately-of its ends; and means whereby when said valve is closed the smoke will pass through the sec- 0nd mentioned passage.
2.1111 assmokers pipe, a bowl having a central chamber extending entirely therethrough and open at eachend, a grate positioned, within-said chamber forming in the upper end thereof a tobacco compartment, a stem havin' a straight smoke passage opening into t e bowl below the grate, the bowl being formed with a passage communicating with the passage in the stem and with the tobacco compartment adjacent its upper end, and a valve mounted within the lower end'of the bowl passage for movement toward and away from the stem to normally close the inner end of the smoke passage through the Stem. v
3. A smokers pipe including a bowl having a central passage extending therethrough and open at each "end, a grate mounted within such passage forming the upper end thereof a tobacco compartment, a stem extending from the bowl below the grate and valve, and a cover mounted on the upper end of the bowl, said. valve when opened estab lishing straight passage from the bowl through the pipe stem.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature;
hi CLEVELAND 2 PINKNEY.
