1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED C. SEWALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Tobacco-Pipe, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tobacco pipes having a tobacco or upper bowl with a smoke passage leading from its lower interior downward through the bottom, and another smoke passage leading upward through the bottom and neck of the pipe to the stem, the two passages being closed and connected by a lower or nicotin bowl or member; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a mechanism that allows the smoke to pass freely from the tobacco bowl through the nicotin or lower bowl and out through the stem, but retaining all nicotin and other waste matter from the tobacco bowl and saliva from the stem until the pipe is cleaned; second, to provide a nicotin or lower bowl that is easily removed, cleaned and replaced. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure '1 is a perspective view of the general appearance of the pipe. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the interior mechanism of the pipe:
The tobacco or upper bowl 1 with the neck 2-, the nicotin or lower bowl 3, and the stem 4 constitute the principal parts of the pipe. The lower exterior circumference of the tobacco or upper bowl 6, is reduced to fit the upper interior circumference of the nicotin or lower bowl 7, the two being secured firmly together by threads or other means. The smoke passage 8 is located slightly forward of the center of the bottom 5, and the smoke passage 9 is located slightly back of the center of the bottom 5, and the bottom 5, being round, tends greatly to deflect and prevent any accumulation in the nicotin or lower bowl 3, that attempts to reenter the smoke passages 8 and 9, thus keeping all waste accumulations in the nicotin or lower bowl 3, until the pipe is cleaned. The stem l is secured in the stem socket 10 by threads or other means.
I am aware that prior to my invention tobacco pipes have been patented with a nicotin, or lower bowl or member closing and connecting a smoke passage from the tobacco or upper bowl and a smoke passage to the stem, I therefore do not claim such a combination broadly; but
I claim:
The combination in a tobacco pipe of a tobacco bowl having a rounded bottom and a smoke passage leading from the interior thereof through said bottom, a neck extending from said tobacco bowl intermediate the ends thereof, and having a stem socket therein, said tobacco bowl having a second smoke passage leading upwardly adjacent said first mentioned smoke passage, from the bottom of said tobacco bowl to said stem socket, and a nicotin bowl removably secured to the lower end of the tobacco bowl.
