APPLICATION FILED MAR. 30. 1914.

THOMAS 'W. HURFF, OF WOODIBURY, NEW JERSEY.
sMoKEas PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1915.
Application filed March 30, 1914. Serial No. 828,371.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. HURFF, a
citizen of the United States, residing at operation will filter the smoke and prevent any saliva or moisture from reaching the filtering material, so that the latter is kept in a dry condition.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view showing each of the separate parts of the pipe in elevation, and Fig. 3 is a view in cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
V 1 represents the bowl of the pipe which is preferably screw-threaded at its upper end to receive a ring 2, the latter clamping a tobacco holding receptacle 4 in the bowl, so that by reason of this construction the receptacle 4 may be made of a different material from the bowl, and when in the bowl will provide a smoke space-5 below the receptacle into which the smoke passes through an opening 6 in the bottom of the receptacle 4.
The bowl 1 has an extension 7 with. a smoke passage 8 therethrough, and this extension 7, at its free end, is reduced in diameter as shown at 9 to receive a cylindrical enlargement 10 on the end of a barrel 11. This barrel 11 is adapted to contain absorbent cotton 12 or other filtering material which is confined in the barrel between the end of the extension 9 and a removable plunger 13. The plunger 13 snugly fits within the barrel, and has an opening therethrough registering with the bore of a tubular stem 14 which extends beyond the end of the barrel an appreciable distance as clearly shown in Fig. 1. q
15 represents the mouth piece of the stem, and 16 is a cylindrical casing secured to the mouth piece in any approved manner and fitting around the outsideof barrel 11 with its end against the cylindrical enlargement 10, so that when the parts are assembled, the extension 7, cylindrical enlargement 10, and casing 14 will be of the same external diameter to give aneat and attractive appearance to the pipe.
My invention is not limited to any particular material in the manufacture of the different parts, nor in the manner of securing the parts together, as I may make all of the parts independent of each other or may connect some permanently.
the plunger 13 serving to exclude all moisture from the filtering material.
Whenever desired, the pipe may be readily taken apart and thoroughly cleaned, each -part being separately handled as. shown clearly in Flg. 2.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the i in casing 16 around the outside of stem 14,.
precise details set forth, but consider my:
self at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A tobacco pipe comprising a hollow bowl having a screw-threaded upper end, a 'tobacco receptacle fitting within the bowl and projecting above the bowl, said'receptacle having an opening in its lower end, a ring screwed onto the bowl and clamping the receptacle in the bowl, an extensionon the a barrel secured to the extension and containing filtering material, a mouth piece, a
bowl having a smoke passage therethrough,
, r aleeeee casing connecting the mouth piece and the In testimony whereof ]l have signed! my barrel, a plunger in the barrel having an name to this specification in the presence of opening .therethrough, and. a tubular stem two subscribing Witnesses.
integral with the plunger and extending THUMAS V7,
' 5 into the casing beyond the encl of the barrel Witnesses:
and projecting toward the month piece, snb-= H. PAUL Lrvnnmonn, stentmlly es olescribeol, A Go WASHINGTON.
