TOBACCO PIPE.
[Application filed Jan. 31, 1900.)` l (No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK L. SCHULZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO CHARLES W. VAIL, OF SAME PLACE.
TOBACCO-PI PE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,839, dated September 24, 1901.
Application led January 3l, 1900. Serial No. 3,4589. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern."
Be it known that I, FRANK L. SCHULZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates 'to a novel construction in a tobacco-pipe, the obj ect being to provide a device in which the tobacco contained in the bowl is prevented from getting into the stem and thence into the mouth of the smoker, and, further, in which a space is provided to receive and retain the nicotine-vapors; and it consists in the feature of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating myinvention, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a tobacco-pipe constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the sieve or strainer employed.
My tobacco-pipe consists of a stem A,which is hollow, tapered slightly toward one end and at its other end is provided with anenlarged elbow portion B, in shape similar to the lower portion of a tobacco-pipe bowl. At the mouth of said portion B, I form an interior annular groove C,interiorly screw-threaded and adapted and provided in its other or flat face with an annular recess D, adapted to receive the rim or frame E of a sieve or strainer F, of wire-gauze or the like. The said groove C is adapted to receive an eXteriorly-threaded nipple or boss G on the lower end of the bowl H, said nipple or boss being likewise provided with an annular groove I to receive said rim E of said' sieve or strainer. Said bowl H fits snugly upon said portion B of said stem A, and together they may be said to form what is generally recognized as the bowl of the tobacco-pipe. The other end of said stem A is interiorlyscreW-threaded to receive the screwthreaded end of a mouthpiece J, mounted on which and extending centrally through said stem A is a tube K, of smaller diameter than said stem, so as to leave afree annular space L between the same. The inner end of said tube K is preferably bent slightly, so as to extend as far as possible above the bottom of said portion B of said stem into which it projects.
My device has the advantage of retaining the same outward appearance as an ordinary t0bacco-pipe,while at the same time it affords a pure cool smoke, the sieve or strainer retaining the tobacco against passage into the stem, and the hollow in the part B and in the annular space L of the stem A forming a condens; ing and collecting chamber in which the nicotine-vapors condense and saliva collects, thus preventing the passage of the disagreeable juice into the mouth.
I claim as my invention#- The combination with a pipe having a stem provided on its bowl end with an upwardlyextending annular ilange screw-threaded on its outer surface, and a bowl screw-threaded in its ,lower end to fit said screw-threaded portion of said stem, the opposing faces of said portions adjacent the interior opening being each provided with an annular groove adapted to receive and retain a ring of wire, of a foraminated screen provided with a circular wire frame adapted to fit within said grooves, when said portions of said pipe are screwed together and be retained imposition,- thereby.
In testimony whereot` I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK L. SCHULZ.
