PATENTED sin 01m SMOKING PIPE This invention relates to a smoking pipe and more particularly to a pipe having a cork bowl with a metal insert and a wire mesh support plate positioned therein to provide a filter for the smoking tobacco.
It is a general object of the present invention to provide a smoking pipe having a cork bowl which is decorative and provides insulating material to protect the user from being burned.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a smoking pipe comprising a stem having a mounting assembly connected thereto, a cork bowl mounted on the mounting assembly in communication with the stem, a metal liner in the cork bowl for protecting the bowl from burning, a perforate support in the liner for supporting smoking material thereon and permitting combustion products therefrom to be transported through the stem to the user, and means for connecting together the stem and the perforate support to maintain the liner in the cork bowl and the cork bowl on the mounting assembly.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a pipe of the type set forth comprising a stem having an elongated sinuous shank with a mouthpiece at one end thereof and a mounting aperture at the other end thereof, a mounting plate having a central aperture therethrough and an upwardly extending lip at the peripheral edge thereof mounted on the stem with the central aperture in registry with the mounting aperture, a truncated ellipsoidal cork bowl mounted on the mounting plate and maintained in position by the lip, a substantially cylindrical metal liner positioned inside the cork bowl having an outwardly extending flange overlying the top of the cork bowl and an opening in the bottom thereof in registry with the central aperture, a wire mesh removably positioned on the bottom of the metal liner overlying the opening for supporting smoking material thereon, and means for connecting together the wire mesh and the mounting plate and the stem to hold the cork bowl and the liner in position to provide a smoking pipe.
These and other objects of the present invention together with further objects and advantages thereof will best be understood by reference to the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is an enlarged sectional view of the pipe bowl portion of the present invention showing the particular arrangement of the parts thereof;
FIG. 2 is an exploded view of the pipe bowl portion of the present invention showing the relationship of each of the parts, and
FIG. 3 is a side elevational view of the entire pipe of the present invention.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a pipe 50 having a stem 55. The stem 55 includes an elongated tubular clear plastic mouthpiece 56 having a lip 57 at one end thereof and a threaded end 58 at the other end thereof. The stem 55 also includes a sinuous metal tubular body portion 60 having a plurality of flutes 61 extending therealong. The body 60 has a mounting portion 62 at one end thereof with a threaded end 63 for receiving the sinuous body 60 therein, the mounting portion 62 having a closed end 64 and a lateral aperture 65. The sinuous body 60 is connected to a decorative connector 67 at the end thereof away from the mounting portion 62, the connector 67 serving to join the mouthpiece 56 to the body 60.
A mounting plate 70 annular in shape is provided with an internal threaded aperture 71 and an upwardly extending lip 72 at the outer pheripheral edge of the plate. Surrounding the aperture 71 and extending in the same direction as the lip 72 is a circular boss 73. An external threaded shank 75 serves to connect the mounting portion 62 of the stem 55 with the mounting plate 70, a spacer 76 having internal threads 77 thereon serving to separate the plate 70 from the mounting portion 62.
The cork bowl 80 which is a truncated ellipsoid is provided with an enlarged central aperture 81 extending therethrough and has a collar 82 at the bottom thereof with a seating surface 83. The cork bowl 80 has a top edge 84 forming the juncture between the surface of the aperture 81 and the outside of the bowl, the bowl in use being seated on the mounting plate 70 with the inside of the lip 72 in contact with the collar 82 and with the seating surface 83 resting on the plate.
A cup has a metal body 91 substantially cylindrical in shape. The bottom 93 of the insulating cup 90 is provided with an enlarged central aperture 94 while the top of the cup is formed into an outwardly extending lip 96 having an abutment surface 97 on the underside thereof. In use, the cup 90 is positioned within the cen tral aperture 81 of the cork bowl 80 with the body of the cup 90 serving to maintain the cup 90 firmly in place while the lip 96 extends over the upper edge of the cork bowl 80.
A support mechanism 100 includes a wire mesh 101 having a circular support surface 102 and a downwardly extending flange 103. A mounting ring fits over the flange 103 of the wire mesh 101 and secures the wire mesh between the ring 105 and a trapping member 110. The trapping member is annular in shape with internal threads 111 and an external trapping surface l12 sized to fit within the flange 103 of the wire mesh 101. The diameter of the ring 105 is slightly less than the inner diameter of the insulating cup 90 thereby to facilitate easy positioning of the support mechanism 100 on the bottom 93 of the cup 90.
As seen particularly in FIGS. 1 and 2, the pipe 50 of the present invention is assembled and held together by means of the threaded member 75 which engages the threaded aperture 65 in the mounting portion 62 and extends through the threaded aperture 71 in the mounting plate 70 and the threaded trapping member thereby to maintain the insulating cup 90 within the cork bowl 80. The lip 72 of the mounting plate 70 forms a decorative finish to as well as providing support for the cork bowl 80. The cup 90 insures that tobacco and the like does not char the cork bowl and harm the same, the cork providing an insulating material and preventing the user from being burned. The boss 73 provides an additional internal threaded surface so as to make the entire construction sturdy and capable of withstanding rough handling. The support mechanism 100 provides a perforate support surface which allows smoke to be drawn through the mesh 101, the threaded member 75 and the stem 55 while at the same time preventing small particles of tobacco and the like from being transported into the user's mouth.
The entire construction of the pipe 50 may be disassembled rather easily to allow the support mechanism 100 to be cleaned insuring easy draw while maintaining small particles in the bowl and out of the users respiratory system. The mounting plate 70 and particularly the lip 72, provides a clean, decorative finish to the pipe 50 as does the lip 96 of the cup 90 which extends slightly over the top of the cork bowl 80. Finally, the support mechanism 100 and more particularly the wire mesh 101 gives a neat, clean-cut appearance to the inside of the pipe while allowing the wire mesh 101 to be cleaned easily if it becomes clogged or even replaced if it becomes necessary. The stem 55 has linked 30 and 60 bends therein which are decorative and advantageous for easy handling and smoking.
It is seen, therefore, that there has been provided a smoking pipe including a cork bowl with a removable inner liner. A tobacco support of perforate material serves to maintain the bowl on the pipe stem along with a threaded shank which interconnects the perforate support and the stem.
While there has been described what is at present considered to be the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it will be understood that various modifications and alterations may be made herein without departing from the true spirit and scope of the present invention, and it is intended to cover in the appended claims all such modifications and alterations as fall within the true spirit and scope of the present invention.
