No. 448,167 3 Claims- (Cl. 131-175) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A health promoting cigarette holding, shielding and smoking device is herein shown and comprises: a bowl having a hollow portion dimensioned to wholly enclose an inverted cigarette. The bowl has a closed lower end and an open upper reduced end portion terminating in a flared endless flange, whereby a cigarette can be suspended with the ignitable end depending into the hollow portion of the bowl. The bowl has (l) a finger controllable air vent and (2) a stem intermediate said upper and lower ends. When the cigarette is lit, falling ashes are trapped in said lower portion below the smoke passage in said stern.

The present invention relates to an ignited cigarette enclosing, holding and smoking device wherein the enclosing means (1) traps the smoke for transmission to the smokers mouth and (2) traps ashes for disposal whenever necessary or desired.

More particularly, the present invention has to do with a pipe-like device wherein a vertically elongated shield functions not only as an enclosing bowl for the burning cigarette but, being longer than the cigarette, traps the ashes and serves as an ash receiver. It is provided on one side with a tubular stem defining a passage for the smoke and is provided at an upper open end with a unique cigarette holder expressly designed and adapted to support the cigarette in an inverted position so that the usual smoking end is exposed to the atmosphere and the ignited end is confined within the chamber portion of the bowllike shield. Accordingly, the cigarette is held so that the smoke is drawn through the same from the unlighted end and is discharged from the lighted end to provide an eificacious smoking result.

The present concept has to do with a technique or practice known as reverse smoking and wherein air is supplied to the burning or combustible end of the cigarette primarily by way of the unlighted end and the smoke is then trapped, confined and drawn by way of a passage directly into the smokers mouth. It is conceded that although the origin of reverse smoking is no doubt a technique in practice which has been in vogue in certain foreign lands for years on end, no effort will be herein made to delve deeply into this aspect of the matter other than to point out that it is an object of the present invention to enable the smoker to achieve the alleged benefits which attend reverse smoking. More specifically, the device herein disclosed will aptly and satisfactorily enable the cigarette smoker to derive cigarette smoking pleasures and, at the same time, lessen the severity of health hazards which have been repeatedly and authoritatively reported for many and diflerent now known reasons.

One improvement resides in the provision of a vertically elongated bowl which constitutes the cigarette enclosing shield, is provided on one side with a tubular stem equipped with a mouthpiece and is further provided with at least one vent to support combustion and which is closed by pressing the finger thereover when pufiing and to facilitate drawing the smoke from the ignited but enclosed end into the mouth.

A further improvement resides in so shaping and constructing the cigarette enclosing bowl or shield that it has the stern originating the capability of permitting a dished outwardly flaring collar to be attached thereto, said collar constituting the holder proper and being unique in that the opening therein is of a critical size which will allow easy insertion of the cigarette and will yet hold it firmly in suspended smoking position.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

FIGURE 1 is a view in perspective of a pipe-type reverse-smoking cigarette holder constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the manner in which it is designed and adapted to be used;

FIGURE 2 is a view on an enlarged scale taken on the plane of the vertical section line 2 ,2 of FIGURE 1; and

FIGURE 3 is an enlarged horizontal cross-section on the plane of the line 33 of FIGURE 2.

Referring now to the primary component part or unit it will be noted that it can be acceptably and satisfactorily made from wood such as is commonly used in the construction of tobacco smoking pipes, metal suitable for pipes, ceramic, glass or injection molded plastics. The one piece main unit or component is denoted by the numeral 4 and it is characterized by a vertically elongated bowllike shield 6 having a hollow body portion 8 of a length appreciably greater than the length of the cigarette 10 having a bottom 12 defining a smoke trapping and accumulating chamber as well as an ash receiver 14. The upper end portion is gradually reduced and fashioned into a neck 16 which is internally screw-threaded (FIGURE 2) at 18. On either one or both sides usually near the neck a vent of suitable size 20 is provided. In use it will be evident that the user will light the cigarette before (1) placing it in the holder 34 and (2) attaching the holder to the screw neck 16.

A laterally directed and suitably curved hollow stem 22 is provided and provides the smoke pufiing passage 24. The lefthand end portion 26 provides a socket for reception of the attaching shank 23 of an appropriate bit or mouthpiece 30. The numeral 32 designates an optionally usable insertable and removable filter.

Of significance is the outwardly flaring and enlarged cigarette holder 34 made from moldable plastic or equivalent material and which has a neck 36 which is screwthreaded and adapted to be screwed into the neck 16 and which has an outwardly flared beaded finger grip 38. Of importance is the precise shape and dimension of the bore 40. This dimension is critical and should be of an inch which has been found to make for easy insertation of the cigarette while at the same time holding and suspending the cigarette in the position for smoking illustrated in FIGURE 2. The stem or mouthpiece 30 can be constructed and arranged, as shown or suitably modified. The hole 20 in the side can be on the left or on the right for lefthanded and righthanded smokers and, when uncovered, to allow oxygen to circulate and keep the cigarette burning when, for example, it is not being pulfed. This hole 20 will be alternatively opened and closed with the finger when the smoker draws or puffs the smoke, much as though he were smoking a pipe.

It will be evident that the device provides its own ashtray or receiver. It may be designed in any of several styles vertically or horizontally shaped or angled with at the center or the bottom or the top and olTset to prevent clogging of the stem with ashes.

Particular attention is called to the fact that while the pipe, generally speaking, is characterized, as usual, by a bowl, tubular stern and mouthpiece, it is original herein in that, in addition to providing the finger-controllable orifice 26, it is of requisite cross-section and length that it properly encloses the burning cigarette and constitutes its own ash receiver. More significantly, the bell-mouth holder or collar is a distinct type of holder in that it permits the cigarette to be held and suspended in an inverted enclosed position in order to practice the art of reverse smoking.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes Will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A cigarette holding, shielding and smoking device comprising a vertically disposed hollow elongated substantially cylindrical bowl member having a length and a diameter suificient to receive a cigarette therewithin in spaced relation to the interior wall of said member, the member having a closed lower and an open upper portion having a relatively reduced diameter terminating at the upper portion of the member in a flared flange, whereby a cigarette may be placed in the bowl member with the unlit end thereof supported by said reduced diameter portion and in depending relation within the hollow portion of said member, said member having an aperture through the wall thereof adapted to admit air to support combustion of a cigarette placed therein and adapted to be closed by a finger by the user thereof, and a stem having a smoke passage therethrough communicating with the interior of the bowl member at location substantially intermediate the upper and lower ends of the bowl member whereby ashes falling from the lit end of the cigarette will lodge in the lower portion of the bowl member below the smoke passage in said stem.

The cigarette holding, shielding and smoking device according to claim 1 and wherein said flanged upper portion is dished and provides a concave endless collar, said collar providing the cigarette holder proper and saidreduced upper portion defining a cigarette embracing opening of a predetermined diametral size precisely proportional with the outside diameter of a conventional cigarette, whereby to allow for easy insertion but snug fitting retention and suspension of the unlit end of said cigarette.

The cigarette holding, shielding and smoking device defined in and according to claim 2 and wherein the hollow portion of said bowl member is of a vertical length appreciably greater than the over-all length of said cigarette, said collar being readily attachable to and detachable from said open upper portion to facilitate detaching the collar, lighting the cigarette, and reattaching the collar with the lit cigarette suspended for smoking in the hollow portion of the bowl member.

Claims

1. A CIGARETTE HOLDING, SHIELDING AND SMOKING DEVICE COMPRISING A VERTICALLY DISPOSED HOLLOW ELONGATED SUBSTANTIALLY CYLINDRICAL BOWL MEMBER HAVING A LENGTH AND A DIAMETER SUFFICIENT TO RECEIVE A CIGARETTE THEREWITHIN IN SPACED RELATION TO THE INTERIOR WALL OF SAID MEMBER, THE MEMBER HAVING A CLOSED LOWER AND EN OPEN UPPER PORTION HAVING A RELATIVELY REDUCED DIAMETER TERMINATING AT THE UPPER PORTION OF THE MEMBER IN A FLARED FLANGE, WHEREBY A CIGARETTE MAY BE PLACED IN THE BOWL MEMBER WITH THE UNLIT END THEREOF SUPPORTED BY SAID REDUCED DIAMETER PORTION AND IN DEPENDING RELATION WITHIN THE HOLLOW PORTION OF SAID MEMBER, SAID MEMBER HAVING AN APERTURE THROUGH THE WALL THEREOF ADAPTED TO ADMIT AIR TO SUPPORT COMBUSTION OF A CIGARETTE PLACED THEREIN AND ADAPTED TO
