Description
D. B. BAKER Feb. 7, 1967 PIPET Filed July 30, 1964 United States Patent 3,302,651 PIPET Dale B. Baker, 1018 E. Imperial Ave., Apt. 2, El Segundo, Calif. 90245 Filed July 30, 1964, Ser. No. 386,135 1 Claim. (Cl. 131--185) This invention relates to pipes and the like for smoking tobacco.
The object of this invention is to provide a tobacco smoking device whereby loose pipe tobacco is placed into an extendable tray, the tray then being slid back into a smoking tube and whereby the loose pipe tobacco comes into contact with a packer plate and through such action packs the loose pipe tobacco between the packer plate and the cap or front end of the slidable tray.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a horizontal view of the present invention shown in elevation and in section;
FIGURE 2 is a transverse view taken along the lines 2--2 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is an exploded perspective view of the pipe tray and pipe cap shown removed from FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the tray stop members shown removed from FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of the pipe bowl shown removed from the invention.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a pipet made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include an elongated hollow pipe bowl 12 having a transverse slot 14 which receives a tobacco packer plate 16. Packer plate 16 is provided with an opening 17 through which the tobacco smoke travels toward the smokers month. As seen in FIGURES 1 and 2, the upper portion of the packer plate is radially larger than the lower portion thereof so that the plate extends completely across the interior of the bowl 12. Bowl 12 is provided with a shoulder 18 against which a clamp ring 20 rests. Clamp ring 20 provides a means for preventing the shank of bowl 12 from splitting and provides a tight fit for the pipet stern which will hereinafter be described. A washer 22 is received within recess 24 of pipe bowl 12 and encompasses the opening 26 of bowl 12. The orifice washer 22 prevents charring and discoloration of the pipet bowl 12 in the area of the orifice 16. A pair of opposed slots 28 through bowl 12 slidably receive arcuately configurated stop plates 30. The opening 32 of bowl 12 freely and slidably receives tray 34. Tray 34 is provided with a pair of lips 36 which are flared slightly outward to provide a stop when in contact with stop plates 30. The lips 36 of tray 34 also prevent tray 34 from wobbling when it is extended from bowl 12. The U-shaped opening 38 of tray 34 provides a means for pipet 10 to receive tobacco. A pair of opposed openings 40 in one end of tray 34 freely receive screws 42 which are threadingly received within openings 44 of a cap 46. Cap 46 is provided with a shoulder 48 against which a clamp ring 49 rests when it is received on the recessed end of bowl 12. The shoulder 50 spaced apart from shoulder 48 on cap 46 abuts with the end of tray 34. Cap 46 seals off the end of tray 34 and bowl 12. An opening 62 within the other end of bowl 12 frictionally receives the extension 54 of pipet stem 56. Pipet stem 56 is received in the mouth of the smoker in the well known manner.
In use, by grasping cap 46 between the fingers, tray 34 is slid outward from bowl 12, whereupon it is filled with tobacco. Tray 34 is then urged back into opening 32, whereupon the packer plate 16 packs the tobacco firmly in tray 34. Pipet 10 is then lighted through the orifice 26.
It shall thus be recognized that packer plate 16 may also serve as a tray stop if the aft end of the tray 34 is flared upwardly.
It shall further be recognized that the stop plates 30 in the forward end of pipet 10 prevent tray 34 from accidentally falling from within bowl 12.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A smoking device including an elongated hollow cylindrical member at one end portion and a mouthpiece attached thereto at the other end portion of the device, said mouthpiece and member having a common longitudinal axis, the free end portion of said members having an opening and a cap member for closing the same, said cap member having a hollow tubular tray attached thereto, adapted to fit within the hollow cylindrical member and to be slidable relative thereto when said cap is removed from said opening, said tray having a U- shaped slot in the upper portion thereof extending from the end thereof adjacent to the mouthpiece to a portion thereof adjacent to that end of the tray which is secured to the cap, the portion of the tray adjacent to the mouthpiece having lip members on opposite sides of the end portion of the slot, the lips terminating in flared portions adapted to bear against the internal wall of said hollow cylindrical member for stabilizing said tray when it is slid outwardly of said cylindrical member, said cylindrical member having a plurality of transverse slots adjacent the free end thereof each having an arcuate plate therein, said plates being adapted to guide said tray as it is slid within said member and to limit the outward movement of the tray with respect thereto, the upper portion of the intermediate portion of the member having a trans verse slot therethrough having a packing plate therein, said packing plate having a smoke passing central aperture therethrough and having an external shape to fit in and conform with the interior of the tray and having extensions thereof on the portion of the plate above the tray adapted to extend across the adjacent portion of the interior of the cylindrical member and said cylindrical member having an aperture through the wall portion thereof overlying the slot in the tray and having a washer surrounding said wall aperture to prevent charring 0f the same, whereby said tray may he slid out of said cylindrical member, filled with tobacco through the slot therein and slid back in the cylindrical member, said packing plate retaining and packing the tobacco in said tray so that the tobacco therein may be ignited through the wall aperture, said wall aperture providing means whereby air may enter the tobacco in the tray for combustion thereof therein.
