Description

C. A. FOLEY June 27, 1933.
APPLIANCE FOR SMOKERS Filed June 16, 1932 Patented June 27, 1933 UNETED STATS" rar r Fries CLIFFORD A. FOLEY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT Application filed June 16,
This invention relates to anappliance for smokers and particularly to an appliance adapted to be placed within the stem of a smoking pipe, cigar holder, cigarette holder or the like, and it is'an object of the invention to provide an appliance of this kind which serves to effect a refiexion in the flow of the smoke as drawn through the stem and in a .manner whereby the smoke is substantially cool when it enters the mouth of the smoker.
Another object of the invention is to provide an appliance of this kind adapted to be arranged within the stem of a pipe or the like and which appliance comprises a plurality of nested tubular members assembled in a manner to effect a back and forth flow of smoke therethrough before the smoke is drawn into the mouth of the smoker.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ara smoking pipe showing an appliance constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention arranged within the stem of such pipe;
Figure 2 is a, longitudinal sectional view taken through the appliance unapplied;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig ure 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, my improved appliance comprises an elongated outer tubular member 1, one end of which being open and the opposite end being closed by a head 2. This member 1 at predetermined points spaced lengthwise thereof is provided with a series of inward- 1932. Serial No. 617,651.
ly directed protuberances 3 herein disclosed as pressed from the wall of the member or shell 1 although such protuberances may be otherwise provided. The protuberances 3 of each series are preferably three in number and equidistantly spaced in a direction circumferentially of the member or. shell 1 as is particularly illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawing. Arranged Within the member or shell 1 is a second tubular member or shell 4, the same being maintained in desired position within the member or shell 1 by contact therewith of the protuberances 3. This memberor shell 4 is of a length to have its inserted end in contact with the head 2 of the member or shell 1 with its opposite end terminating a slight distance inwardly of the openend of the member or shell 1 as particularly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing.
The opposite end portions of the member or shell 4 are provided therearouiid with the notches or recesses 5, said notches or recesses 5 immediately adjacent to the head2 of the member or shell 1 providing openings for the desired flow of smoke as clearly indicated in p the accompanying drawing by the arrows. The inserted end of the member or shell 4 s also open while the outer or opposite end 1s closedby the head 6. The member or shell 4 at points spaced therealong is also provided with the inwardly directed pro-' tuberances 7 preferably after the same fash ion as hereinbefore stated with respect to the protuberances 3. 83
These protuberances 7 serve to support and properly position the central tubular member or shell 8 initially open at both ends. This member or shell 8 is disposed through the head 2 of the member or shell 1 within the applied member or shell 4 with its inserted end in close contact with the head 6 of the member or shell 4. This inserted end portion of the member or shell 8 is provided with notches or recesses 9 so that the smoke may have the desired flow into the member or shell 4 at said inserted end. This inner member or shell 8 is of a length when applied to extend a desired distance at all times beyond the head 2 of the shell or member 4.
The appliance as herein disclosed is adapted to be arranged within the bore of the stem S' of a pipe as illustrated in the accompanying drawing or the stem of acigar holder or cigarette holder, and the portion of the memher or shell 8 extending beyond the head 2 of the member or shell 1 is adapted to be telescopically received within thebore of the mouthpiece P, said mouth piece, being 'of any desired type such as used in connection with pipe stems and the like. With my improved appliance applied within the stem S it is believed to be readily apparent that the smoke as drawn through said stem Swill havesuch reflexion in'its travel to assure the sameas it enters the, mouth of the smoker being substantially cool and that the tobacco within the bowl of the pipe or the cigar or cigarette, should the stem S be used as a holder therefor, will be effectively protected against saliva. I
From the foregoing description it "is thought to be obvious that an appliance for smokers constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and op-' erated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to theprecise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim f 1. A smokers appliance for insertion within a stem comprising a series of shells nested one within the other, one end of the outer shell being open and the opposite end closed, the inner shells coacting one with the otherto cause the smoke to pass through all of the shells in reverse directions, said shells being in spaced relation, each of the outer shells being provided with inwardly disposed protuberances for contact with the adjacent shell to maintain the same inv desired assembly. p p
2. An appliance of the class described comprising a shell open at one end and closed at the other end and provided therealong with inwardly directed protuberances, a second shellinscrted within the first named shell, the protuberances of the first shell contacting with the second shell for main? taining the same in assembled relation, the outer end of the second shell being closed, the inner end of said second shell contacting with the closed end of the first shell and having recesses to allow the passage offlsmoke, and another elongated shell inserted'within the second shell through the closed end of the first shell and contacting with the closed end the second shell, the closed end of'the last named shell also having notches for the passage of smoke.
3. An appliance of the class described comprising a shell open at one end and closed at the other end and provided therealong with inwardly directed protuberances, a sec ond shell inserted within the first named shell, the protuberances of thefirst shell contacting with the second shell for maintaining the same in assembled relation, the outer end of the second shell being closed, the inner end of said second shell contacting with the closed end of the first shell and having recesses to allow the passage of smoke, and another elongated 'shell inserted within the second shell through the closed end of the first shell and contacting with the closed end of the second shell, the closed end of the last named shell also having notches for the passage of smoke, saidlast named shell having a portion extending outwardly beyond the closed end of the first shelL; i
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
