Description

April 1, 1930. c. 'SCHEER I AT'jlI'ACHMENT FOR PIPE STEMS Filed May 13, 1927 Cwg 36%;
BY IIN-VEB-ITiRR ATTORN EY WITNESS:
Patented Apr. 1, 1930 UNETED STATES CHARLES SCHEER, OF SILVIQRTOIN, COLORADO ATTACHMENT FOR PIPES'IEMS Application filed May 13,
The object of this invention is to provide an attachment adapted to be applied to the mouth piece of a pipe stem, the end of the stem being grooved, for the purpose of preventing nicotine from reaching the mouth of the smoker.
A further object is to provide a device in the form of a cap or cup adapted to resiliently engage the end of a stem which has been grooved in the manner illustrated, the device extending suficiently under the stem to prevent the entrance of saliva, and permitting the cooling of the smoke which is discharged at a point above the saliva collecting portion.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made 33 within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming part of this applioation,
Figure l is a view of a smoking pipe in side 535 elevation, the attachment for the end of the stem, or for the mouth piece, being in operative position.
Figure 2 is a section longitudinally of the end of the stem or mouth piece, and thru the 39 attachment forming the subject matter of the present case.
Figure 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
The bowl of a smoking pipe is designated 10, the stem formed therewith being shown at 11, and the mouth piece 12 being provided with lateral projections, at the end portion of the mouth piece, such as those shown at 18,
these elements last named bein engaged by the inner wall of the cup or ca 15.
The attachment or cap 15 may be of resilient material, and in any event will form a sufficiently tight fit to permit of its retention on the end of the mouth piece.
A groove or channel extends across the end of the mouth piece, and is designated 16, one wall being shown in elevation in Figure 2, and the groove being further shown in Figure 3.
The relation of the elements. and of the 1927. Serial No. 191,169.
grooved portion is important, in that the smoke is intended to be discharged from the upper portion of the groove 16, and the lower portion thereof is within the lower portion of the cap 15, a space being provided at 17 for the accumulation of saliva, to a slight extent, so that the latter will not readily enter the bore of the stem or mouth piece, this bore being designated 18.
The attachment, formed as indicated, is self adjustable to a reasonable extent, but can of course be made in difierent sizes, if required, to suit the condition existing, so that pipes of various makes may be supplied.
Having described the invention what is claimed is The combination with a mouth piece for a smoking pipe, said mouth piece being provided with an enlarged portion at its outer end, and. with a channel extending across the bore of the mouth piece, of a resilient cupshaped member surrounding and frictionally engaging the enlarged portion, 'leaving openings into the cup from the ends of the channel, the inner walls of the cup-shaped member being spaced from portions of the mouth piece adjacent to the enlarged portion.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
CHARLES SGHEER.
