COMBINATION PIPE CLEANER.
Application filed June 11, 1926. .Serial No. 115,293.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a combination pipe cleaner in which a number of articles are COIIlbIIlGd for use by pipe smokers.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device of this class which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture, durable in use and compact for,
carrying purposes. a
'Another object of theinvention is to provide a device of this class for tamping the tobacco into the bowl of the pipe for scraping the caked carbon from the inner surface of the bowl of the pipe and for cleaning the passageway through the stem of the pipe.
' Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which, Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the invention showing it applied to a pipe.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the invention showingit applied for,
tamping purposes. 1
Fig. 4 is a central vertical sectional view' of a pipe through the stem showing the cleaner inserted into the stem passage.
The invention comprises ahead? preferably made from metal and provided with an interiorly threaded bore 8, formed inone end of the head, the opposite end 9 beingformed preferably of cylindrical contour. A tubular stem 10K is provided, the end of which is cut diagonally at c 11 to provide a scraping or digging element whereby the layersof burned tobacco may be removed from the pipe bowl 12. Normally this stem 10, which is tubular. is threaded into "the bore 8, as shown in Fig. 2. Carried in the stem 10 is a pipe stem cleaner13, which is doubled upon itself when in the stemflO. This cleaner 13 is preferably made from wire or other suitable metal so that it may be projected through the passage 14 formed in the pipe stem 15. The head 7 serves as a tamping tool for tamping the tobacco 16 into the bowl 12 and for this purpose'the cylindrical surface 9 is perforated.
It is believed obvious that the head 7 will also serve as a llElIlClllOlCllWl'lGll the stem 10 is used for scraping or digging the caking out of the pipe bowl l2. When it is desired to use the pipe stem cleaner 13 it is, .of course, necessary to remove the stem 10 from the threading. The pipe stem cleaner 13 may be used a number of times, being doubled upon itself and placed in thestem 10, each time it is used so that it may becarried about on the person. In this connection it will be noted that the bore 8 is closed at its end so '60 -head-7 which may be easily done by unthat when the pipe stem cleaner 13 is placed within the stem lO it is entirely enclosed sothat anyodor which may cling to it will not be permitted to escape.
The advantages of such a device is believed obvious to pipe smokers.
It will be noted that the. inner end 8 of the bore 8 is restricted slightly so that this portion will extend beyond the end ofthe stem 10 when threaded into the bore 8. This permits the doubled over wire portion 13 to project beyond the stem 10 when positioned in the bore 8 so that when the stem l0-is detached from the head 7 the removal of the flexible pipe cleaner from the stem 10 may be very easily and quickly effected.
' lVhile Ihave illustrated and described the preferred form of structure I do'not wish to limit myself to the precise'form-of structure shown but desire to avail myself of such I variations and modifications as may come Within the'scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described conipris- 1 member projectin beyond the end of said stem when threa ed into said bore.
3. A device of the class described, comprising: a head having a threaded bore formed in one end thereof; and a tubular stem closed at one end and threaded on itsopposite end I for engaging in said bore, the closed end.
of said stem having a base inclined to its axis, the outer surface of said base forming a digging element.
In'testimony whereof I have signed vthe foregoing.
WILFRED J. BROWN.
