UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
, room: PROTECTOR.
Application filed December 5, 1924. Serial No. 754,040.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that we, WILLIAM SHERMER and SAMUEL HERMANN, citizens .of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Teeth Protectors, of which the following is a specification. 7
Our inventionrelates to teeth protectors for pipe stems and cigar holders.
The objects are to provide means, adapted to fit over theends of pipe stems and cigar holders, which will serve as a cushion to absorb shocks between the teeth and the stem; which will not slip on the stem while in use; which will be sanitary, and wh1ch will fit practically all types of pipe stems and cigar holders.
These objects, and other advantageous v 20 ends which will bedescribed hereinafter,
we attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a perspective view of a pipe having our protector applied thereto,
Figure 2 an enlarged section through the protector shown in Figure 1, showing the pipe stem broken away, and
Figure 3 a view similar to Figure 2 showing a modified form of protector.
Referring tothe drawings, 1 indicates a pipe, 2 its stem and 3 a shoulder adjacent the end of the stem. For purpose of illustration, we have-shown our protector applied to a pipe stem but it may be used equally well with any cigar or cigarette holder which has a stem and a shoulder similar to the stem '2 and shoulder 3. The protector consists of a tubular part 4 which fits around the stem, a bead 5 on the end of the tubular part. and abutting shoulder 3, and an enclosing part 6 on head 5 which fits over the end of the stem. The part is drawn from the stem. -The enclosing slipping off the stem and serves as a cushion to absorb shocks when the shoulder Strikes 6 has a hole 7 therein through which smoke.
against the inner side of the teeth. The bead also serves as a shoulder for prevent- 55 ingthe stem from slipping from between the teeth. Part 6 on bead 5 prevents foreign matter from lodging between the bead and the shoulder, and makes the pipe sanitary. The protector may be made of ,6!) suitable elastic material such as rubber.
In Figure 3, I have shown a tubular part 4*, and a bead 5 on the tubular part abutting the shoulder 3 on the stem 2. .A protector of this form is simple and may be made at low cost.
While we have described our invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction set forth, but consider that we are at liberty to make such. changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our. invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tooth protector for pipe stems and cigar holders having a stem and a shoulder thereon, and consisting of a tubular part adapted to fit around the stem, a bead on one end of the tubular part adapted to abut the inward side of the shoulder, and an enclosing part extending outward of the bead adapted to fit over said shoulder and the end of said'stem and having an opening therein for passage of smoke from the stem. 1
2. A tooth protector of elastic anti-slipping material for pipe stems and cigar holders having a stem and a shoulder thereon, consisting of a tubularpart/ adapted to fit around the stem and having a bead adapted to abut the shoulder, and an en- 95 closing part on the tubular part adapted to fit over the end ofthe stem .and having a hole therein.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the of two subscribing witnesses.
