. corporation of New York Application October 13, 1947, Serial No. 779,506 n 1 Claim.
'Ihis invention relates to smoking pipes.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved smoking pipe which is so constructed as to provide a dry tobacco bowl so that substantially all of the tobacco in the bowl may be used.
Another object of this invention is to provide a smoking pipe wherein the mouthpiece has secured thereto a cleaning plunger which upon removal of the mouthpiece will clean the bore of the stem.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a smoking pipe an improved means for preventing the passage of saliva from the mouthpiece into the stem so that the tobacco in the lower portion of the bowl will not become moistened.
A further object of this invention is to provide a smoking pipe which includes an improved biting element formed with the mouthpiece so as to prevent collapse of the mouthpiece at the point where it is engaged in the mouth of the smoker.
To the foregoing objects, and others which may hereinafter more fully appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more specically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a smoking pipe constructed according to an embodiment of this invention, portions of the rod assembly being shown in elevation.
Figure 2 is a plan View of the rod assembly.
Figure 3 is a detailed side elevation of the rod assembly, ,partly broken away and in section.
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l designates generally the bowl of a smoking pipe which has extending therefrom a stem I I. The stem I I is formed with a lengthwise extending bore I2 and a passage I3 extends from the forward end of the bore I2 and communicates with the interior of the bowl I0 at a point forwardly of the center of the bowl I0. A mouthpiece I4 is engaged with the stem I I being provided with an internally threaded stud I5 frictionally engaging within the inner or rear end of the bore I2. The mouthpiece I4 is provided with a lengthwise extending bore I6 and, in the present instance, the mouth-piece I4 includes an inner biting portion I1 which is integral with the mouthpiece member I4. The inner biting portion I1 is reinforced by a sleeve or tubular member I8 which may be made of metal or the like.
An elongated plunger rod, rod assembly generally indicated at 26, includes a shank portion I9 and is threaded at its mid point 2t into the stud I5. Portion I9 extends lengthwise of the bore I2 of the stem II. The portion I9 has at the forward end thereof a piston or head 2l which is of a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the bore I2 so that the head 2I can be readily pulled through the bore I2 upon removal of the mouthpiece I4. f
The plunger rod assembly 26 also includes a small integral coaxial rod 22 of lesser diameter than portion I9, which comprises a second shank which terminates in an inner head 23. The intermediate threaded portion of the plunger rod 28 is formed with an elongated arcuate groove 24 providing communication between the bore I2 and the bore I6. The inner end of the rod 22 and the head 23 are also formed with a slot 25 so that the smoke may freely be drawn past the head 23.
The rod 22 forms with the inner end of the plunger rod I9 a moisture trap which Will tend to prevent any saliva from flowing outwardly from the bore I6 into the bore I2 of the stein.
In the use of this smoking pipe the bowl I0 is filled in the normal manner and the smoke drawn through the bore I2 of the stem II and through the bore I6 of the mouthpiece I4. When it is desired to clean the stem II, the mouthpiece I4 is removed from the stem I I drawing therewith the plunger rod I9 and the plunger member or head 2|. As the plunger 2i is drawn through the bore l2 accumulations within the bore I2 will be drawn therewith.
rEhe head 23 also constitutes a cleaning member for removing accumulations within the bore i6. The bore Iii is cleaned by unthreading rod I9 from stud I5 and pulling rod 22 and head out- .'ardly of bore I6.
What is claimed is: Y
In a smoking pipe, a stem with a bore therethrough and a mouthpiece having a bore of lesser diameter than said first bore, a reduced stud connecting said mouthpiece and said stem, said stud being internally threaded, a plunger rod assembly including a threaded intermediate portion and oppositely extending shank portions of different diameters extending into said bores,
said threaded intermediate portion, and a head at the extremity of each shank portion adapted to t into the bore in which it is positioned, whereby upon withdrawal each head may clean its associated bore.
