Patented Feb. 13.6, '1932 entre@ starts l:MASON J. SMITH, 0F KANSAS CITY, MISSOUM lmofurnrrncn SLEEVE Application-filed March 25, 1931. Serial No. 525,120.
rlihis invention relates to a new article of manufacture formed particularly for combination with mouth pieces and especially the mouth pieces of pipes, cigar and cigarette is to provide an article which fully protects the mouth piece with which it is used, as well as the teeth of the smoker.
lt is well known that pipe smokers have a M, tendency'to grip the mouth piece ofthe pipe at times, which grip is severe enough to grind away both the teeth and the pipe stem.
Through the use of a device contemplated by this invention, such grinding or injurious 5 action might be 'obviated.4 ln view of the above, therefore, this invention further contemplates the use of a pliable protector for mouth pieces which is constructed to present a cushion interposed between the teeth of the v smoker and the hard surface of the mouth piece of his pipe, cigar or cigarette holder.
Specific objects of the invention including the manner of making a mouth piece sleeve in accordance with this invention will appear f during the vcourse of the following specification, referringy to the 'accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a smokers pipe equipped with a mouth piece sleeve made in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal section through the attachment and the ad-Y joining portion of the smokers pipe.
-Fig. 3 is a vertical cross .section of the same taken on line HI-IIlof Fig. 2. l
Fig. 4 is a broken side elevation ofa mouth piece sleeve before its attachment to a mouth piece. y
f Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a cigar holder e haing the protecting sleeve aixed thereto,
an 7 v Fig. 6 is `a view showing a mouth piece sleeve attached to a cigarette holder.y e In specifically describing the invention as it is embodied in a` protecting sleeve as illustrated .in the drawings, like reference char- 'i ,acter's will be used to designate similar parts throughout the several views. Materials from which the protector is made might include anycompospltions which have the inholders. The primary obj-ect of the invention herent quality of being pliable enough to conform to the contour of the mouth piece with which it is used, yet tough enough to withstandthe grip imposed thereon by the teeth of the user. 55 Preferably, the mouth piece sleeve consists of a single piece of pliable material molded or otherwise formedto presenta sleeve 8 having an inwardly and laterally disposed an'ge 10 at each end respectively thereof, which en-y e@ gages the'mouth piece 12 of either the smoking pipe, cigar holder or cigarette holder, as illustrated in the drawings.
Reference to Fig. 2 readily indicates that ianges 10 maintain. the wall of sleeve 8 beas i tween flanges `10 in spaced relation to the mouth piece 12 Aso that besides the pliability of the sleeve, a cushion is presented which absorbs any shocks which might normally be -set up between mouth piece 12 and the teeth 70 of the smoker. t
This last mentioned feature being the salient object of the invention, the same is further insured by building into the device a plurality of flutes 14 which may extend along 75 the inner wall of sleeve 8in any direction, vbut which preferably are formed longitudinally of sleeve 8 and to terminate inwardly from the ends of the sleeve, whereby they will not aiiect a'positive grip which flanges 10 have 30 established. With this iluted construction, the space between mouth piece 12 and sleeve 8 is not regular, but is increased at more or less'regular intervals throughout the area of the inner wall of sleeve 8.
To further strengthen sleeve 8 and form4 moreor less of a limiting zone, an outwardly directed bead 16 is molded at each end respectively of sleeve 8. As indicated in the drawings, both flanges 10 and beads 16 are 99 A continuous, and their combined thickness, together with the thickness of sleevel 8, presents -a structure which is strong at the points necessary, yet pliable andagreeable along the zone of grlp where such qualities are most desirable. Y j l Modifications as to specific form, contour, 'j size and material might be made when mak ing a mouth piece sleeve in accordance with this invention without departing from the broad concepts thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is: 1. As a new article of manufacture, a protector formed to engage a mouth piece, comprising a sleeve of pllablel material; and an inwardly and laterally disposed flange at each end respectively of said sleevewhereby to maintain the sleeve wall in spacedV relation to the mouth piece intermediate said flanges.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a protector formed to engagea mouth piece, comprising asleeve of pliable material; an inwardly and laterally disposed flange at each end respectively of said sleeve; and an outwardly directed bead at each end respectively of said sleeve.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a protector formed to engage a mouth piece, comprising a sleeve of pliable material; means to maintain the major portion of the sleeve wall in spaced relation to the mouth piece; and a plurality of flutes formed in that portion of the sleeve wall held in spaced relation to the mouth piece. b
4. A mouth piece sleeve of pliable material formed to present a sleeve; and a plurality of longitudinal flutesalongthe inner annular wall of said sleeve, said flutes terminating inwardly from the ends of said sleeve.
5. A mouth piece sleeve of pliable material formed to present a sleeve; a plurality `of longitudinal flutes along the inner wall of.
said sleeve; and an inwardly disposed {iange at each end respectivelyof said sleeve, said iutes terminating at said anges.
- 6. A mouth piece of pliable material -formed to present a sleeve; a plurality of flutes along the inner wall of said sleeve; an inwardly disposed angeand an outwardly disposed bead vat each end respectively of said sleeve. K
lln testimony whereof, I hereunto aix my signature.
