of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, but it isto be understood that the structure shown is intended merely as a disclosure of the essential features and novel characteristics of my invention in a preferred form and that its scope is as do fined in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 designates the bowl of my improved pipe, 11 its stem and 12 its detachable mouth piece. Bowl 10 is provided as usual with a. tobacco chamber 13 and stem 11 is provided with a bore 14 of relatively large diameter which extends across the bottom of said tobacco chamber and communicates therewith through a restricted portion 15 of the latter. Rotatably and removably fitted within the bore 14 of stem 11 is a metallic tube 16 having segmental portions thereof at its inner end cut away, leaving a plurality of longitudinally extending circumferentially spaced bars 17 forming a cage or holder for a small amount of filtering and residue collecting material 18 such, for example, as commercial steel wool, which, in the proper assembly of tube 16 within bore 14. underlies the tobacco chamber 13 and constitutes in conjunction with the bars 17 a bed or support for tobacco contained within said chamber.

Carried by tube 16 at its outer end is a ferrule 19 provided to form an even external continuation of stem 11 and mouthpiece 12 when these parts are connected together and tube 16is Josit'i'oned within bore 14, and also foi' m'in'g a means whereby n'iouth iiiece 12 may conveniently have detachable connection with' the body portion of the pipe, it being noted that stem 12 is provided with a reduced portionQO at its inner end detachably fitting within said ferrule.

As some smokers object to the taste of smoke that passes through any metallic member, a cylindrical wood plug 21 with a central open-:ingQQ therethrough for the passage of smoke may be inserted in tube 16 to prevent the smoke from contacting with said tube. The use of a wood plug 21, however, is, of course, optional and if one is not used tube 16 may be filled completely with filtering and residue collecting material, while on the other hand, if a plug 21 is used, its length being less than the length of tube 16, will define within the inner end portion of said tube a chamber of a size for the reception of an ample amount of filtering and residue collecting material to serve the purpose of cleansing the smoke before it reaches the mouth of the smoker.

The spaces between the bars 17 provide communication between the tobacco chamber 13 and the stem of the pipe in different rotated positions of tube 16 as is manifest, and since tube 16 is rotatable within bore 14 it also is manifest that new and clean portions of the material 18 may be disposed towards chamber 13 by partially rotating said tube. Furthermore, the edges of the bars 17 provide scrapers for cleanin the wall of bore 14 when tube 16 is rotate Preferably but not necessarily ferrule 19 is permanently assembled with tube 16 as shown and said tube is slidably engageable and disengageable with and from stem 11 to permit of the ready cleansing of these parts and the ready insertion within and removal from said tube of a plug 21 and filtering material 18.

From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings it is believed that the construction and advantages of my improved pipe will be fully understood. I desire to point out, however, that departures from the construction shown may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A tobacco pipe including a bowl pro-' vided with a tobacco chamber, a stem provided with a bore in communication with said tobacco chamber, a tube removably en gageable in said bore, said tube being open at its inner end and having segmental cut out portions opening through the inner end thereof adapted to underlie said tobacco chamber, said out out portions extending inwardly of said tube throughout only a portion of the length thereof, and filtering and residue collecting material removably engageable within said tube through the open inner end thereof.

2. A tobacco pipe including a bowl and a stem, a member removably engaged Within said stem and projecting beyond the outer end thereof, a mouthpiece having a reduced end portion of the same cross sectional size and shape as the projecting end of said member, and a ferrule removably engaged partially over the projecting end of said 111emher and partially over the reduced end porion of said mouthpiece serving to detachably connect said mouthpiece through said member with said stem.

3. A tobacco pipe including a bowl and a stem, a tube removably engaged within said SiGlH and projecting beyond the outer end thereof, a mouthpiece having a reduced end portion of the same cross sectional size and shape as the projecting end of said tube engaged at its end against the projecting end of said tube, a ferrule removably engaged partially over the projecting end of said tube and partially over the reduced end portion of said mouthpiece serving to detachably connect said mouthpiece through said tube with said stem, and a plug removably engaged in said tube with one end abutting the end face oi the reduced end portion of said mouthpiece.
