A ucatimmeaim ust 31,1926. Serial No. 132,7 8.. I
The 'object of my invention is to afford simple but effective sanitary means for the protection of the stems and mouth pieces of smokers tobacco pipes and cigar holders when the same are not in actual use, in such manner that dirt, dust, and extraneous matter will be excluded from contact therewith,
I all as hereinafter fully set forth,the invention consisting in the specific construction and arrangement of the device shown, descr bed and claimed herein, and an incidental feature being its adaptability to stems of various shapes and sizes, thereby the protector is available, as an article of manufacture, for general use. 7
In the accompanying drawings I illustrate a practical embodiment of the essential features of my invention as adapted to the protection of smokers pipe stems and cigar holders, although I do not restrict myself to the identical configuration of parts thereof, shown by way of exemplification, since changes may be made in minor details and equivalent expedients resorted to with like results, and without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect. v v
With this understanding, v V
Fig. 1 represents atop view. of a tobacco pipeiitg the stem of which my protector is pp 9 Fig. 2 a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1; I b
Fig. 3 is a view similar'to Fig. 1, showing my protector as applied to smaller pipe and stem;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the protector taken upon plane of line 44, Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the protector taken upon plane of line 5.5, Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the protector;
Fig. 7 is a View like unto Fig. 3, but show ing the protector as applied to the mouth piece of a cigar holder. 7 My protective device Y for the use of smokers consists primarily of a socket piece or receptacle constituting practically a cap. 0, adapted to fit over the mouth piece and adjacent portion of the stem of a tobacco pipe P, or of a cigar holder H, as indicated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 7, of the drawings; and secondarily, in forming said cap C, with a r'oldable extension 0, which may be inturned as shown in Figs. 3and 7 of the drawings,
-for the purpose of compensating for differences in thesize. shapeot the pipe stems or'mouth pieces of cigar'holders, etc.,,to whichthe device may be applied, and insuring a close contactual-fit of the parts involved. a
My protector is a one-piece, unitary structure of'elastic resilient rubber,'cast, pressed 7 or moulded into requisite shape by means well knownin the art of manufacture of analogous rubber goods.
The rear end a, of the protector is closed,
and relatively thick to stifien the structure and afford a firm fingerhold for manipula' ti v e purposes. Also, for the'purpose of fae cilitating manipulation, and'reinforcing the front end of the receptacle C, it ,is formed with an annular-collar '0 around the insert opening a (Fig. i4t) ,-said collar affording a finger hold conveniently available in the application or removal of the device as related to the mouth piece and stem of the article in conjunction with which it may be used. 7 I The foldableextension or wedgeinsert a,
of the protectorprojects from the annular,
the outer portion tapercollar 0 as" a base,
and the ing toward the contracted end 0 outer side of with a groove '0 to conform to the shape said extension being formed of the adjacent portion or a pipe or holder inturned extension 0, and the opposed inner side of the protector,
3 and 7, of the drawings.
It Will be readily understood that by the use of my auxiliary detachable protective cap C, a pipe stem mouth piece, or that of a cigar holder, etc., may be efiectually safeguarded against soiling or contamination by extraneous objects or matter, the elastic resilience of the rubber of which the protector is formed insuring a close fit and contactual engagement of surfaces to the exclusion of that the smokers utensil be carried in the pocket, or otherwise disposed of when not in actual I dust, dirt, etc., so thus equipped may as illustrated in Figs. 1
