My invention relates to a pencil attachment, especially a combined point protector and tweezers, which is particularly adapted for use on so-called eyebrow pencils.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which is of simple and cheap construction and convenient in use.

Referring to the accompanying drawing,

My improved device as illustrated in Figs. 1

to 5 of the drawing comprises a sleeve 2 which is adapted to be applied to one end of the pencil and a pair of tweezers comprising arms 4, the lower portion of which are connected by a base portion 0.

5 The sleeve 2 is preferably made of spring sheet metal, the lower portion of which is split or slotted at 8 so as to enable it to resiliently grip the pencil to which it is applied. An outwardly projecting annular bead I0 is formed in the sleeve a slight distance from the outer end thereof. The arms 4 and connecting base 6 are preferably formed from a single piece of spring sheet metal. The spring arms 4 have their upper portions tapering substantially to a point and the portions thereof below the pointed ends or jaws are curved transversely in an arc of a radius corresponding substantially to the inside radius of the sleeve 2. The lower end portions of the arms are provided with outwardly projecting beads H which when the tweezers and sleeve are assembled are received in the bead ID. The base 6 of the tweezers is preferably of conical form, as shown.

The tweezers and sleeve are so formed asto permit the tweezers to be inserted with their jaw ends foremost through the sleeve l0 until the beads l2 reach a position opposite the bead 0 whereupon the arms 4, which are placed under tension as they are forced through the sleeve, serve to snap the beads l2 into the bead ID in the sleeve and thus securely lock the tweezers to 5 the sleeve. When the parts are thus assembled, the portions of the spring arms within the sleeve above the bead l0 firmly engage the inner surface of the sleeve so as to securely hold them from becoming displaced outwardly, thus insuring the 10 points or jaws of the tweezers being held in proper position in proximity to each other.

The sleeve 2 may be easily and cheaply formed on an eyeletting machine, and the tweezers stamped from a single piece of sheet metal and 15 then the arms bent upwardly from the base 6 to position their jaws in proper spaced relation. The sleeve and tweezers may be easily assembled as above described to provide a strong and durable construction. 20

The conical base 6 which receives the point of the pencil lead, tightly closes the end of the sleeve 2 and forms therewith an efiective protector for the point of the pencil. The lead of eyebrow pencils being extremely soft, it must be 5 suitably covered when being carried in the hand bag of the user. The pencil and sleeve form a convenient handle in using the tweezers.

In the modified form shown in Fig. 5, instead of the tweezers being telescopingly received in 3 the end of the sleeve as above described, the lower portions of the arms are connected by a sleeve or collar M which are telescopingly received over the end of the sleeve 2' of the device. This sleeve 2 may have its upper end split at [6 so 35 as to enable it to tightly press against the collar M and thus hold a bead l8 thereon in engagement with a bead 26 on said collar to lock the parts together. The upper end of the sleeve 2' may be closed by a wall 22. 40

Instead of the sleeves 2 and 2 being in the form of a point protector, they may be in the form of a ferrule permanently attached to one end of the pencil.

The improved device shown in Figs. 6, '7 and 8 45 may be made of a single piece of spring sheet metal. This device is provided with a sleeve 24 and tweezers comprising spring arms 26 projecting from one end of the sleeve. Said end of the sleeve near the inner ends of said spring arms 50 is provided with inwardly bent lip portions 28 and the inner ends of the arms are provided with inwardly bent portions 29. These portions 28 and 29 substantially close said end of the sleeve so as to provide a protecting covering over the point of the pencil. The adjacent edges of the sleeve portion of the piece of sheet metal irom which the device is formed, are spaced a slight distance apart to provide a slot 30 to permit the sleeve to resiliently grip the pencil to which it is applied.

This single piece construction of combined tweezer and pencil point protector may be cheaply manufactured, the tweezer arms may be of the requisite length and resiliency to produce the best results, and the device is of neat and attractive appearance.

The present application is a continuation in part of my application Serial No. 3,241, filed January 24, 1935, allowed January 14,. 1936 and now abandoned.

As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits various modificationswithout departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. A pencil attachment comprising a sleeve adapted to be placed on one end of a pencil, and a pair of tweezers comprising spring arms and a base portion connecting said arms, said base and lower portions of said arms extending into one end or said sleeve so as to close said end, said sleeve having an outwardly projecting bead formed therein and the lower portions of said spring arms having corresponding projections received in said bead and held therein by the tension of said spring arms, and said spring arms being held under tension, by the engagement of the lower portions thereof with the end of the sleeve.

2. A pencil attachment comprising a sleeve adapted to be placed on one end of the pencil and a pair of tweezers comprising spring arms and a base portion connectingv said arms, said 40 tweezers being adapted to be telescopingly inserted with the free ends of the arms foremost through the inner end of said sleeve so as to position said base portion in proximity to the other end of said sleeve, said tweezers and sleeve having portions adapted to engage when the tweezers are thus positioned and to be held in interlocking engagement by the tension of said spring arms.

3. A pencil attachment comprising a sleeve adapted to be placed on one end of a pencil, and a pair of tweezers comprising spring arms, and a portion connecting the lower end of said arms and secured in one end of said sleeve so as to close said end.

4. A pencil attachment comprising a sleeve adapted to be placed on one end of a pencil, and a pair of tweezers comprising spring arms and a portion connecting said arms, said connecting portion being in telescoping engagement with and secured to one end of said sleeve and said arms projecting beyond said end of the sleeve.

5. A pencil attachment comprising a sleeve adapted to be placed on one end of the pencil and tweezers comprising a pair of spring arms projecting from one end of said sleeve, said end of the sleeve adjacent the inner ends of said arms being at least partially closed.

6. A pencil attachment comprising a sleeve adapted to be placed on the end of a pencil, tweezers comprising a pair of spring arms projecting from one end of said sleeve and integral therewith, said end of the sleeve between the inner ends of said arms being at least partially closed.

'7. A pencil attachment made from a single piece of sheet metal comprising a sleeve adapted to be placed on one end of a pencil, and tweezers comprising a pair of spring arms projecting from one end of said sleeve and integral therewith, said end of said sleeve having inwardly turned portions between the inner ends of said arms for at least partially closing said end of the sleeve.
