ROBERT I). GRAIVIE, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 29, 1911.
Patented Sept. 17, 1912.
Serial No. 641,201.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT D. GRAME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tobacco pipes and more particularly to a pipe embodying means for cleaning the stummel.
The object of the invention is the provision of a simple and eiiicient device which may be attached to the reduced end of the ordinary push stem type of mouthpiece without any considerable amount of trouble and which will seat in the stummel in such a manner that the same will be automatically cleaned when the mouthpiece is removed.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying` drawing, which forms a partof this application, and in which Figure l is a longitudinal section through the pipe. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the mouthpiece after being fitted for the cleaning attachment.v Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device before being applied to the mouthpiece. F ig. 4 is a plan view of the blank before being bent into shape.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, l represents the bowl of the pipe, 2 the stummel and 3 the mouthpiece. The aperture through the stummel, shown at 4l, is of the same size throughout its length and of suiiicient diameter to receive the reduced end 5 of the mouthpiece.
Thus far the pipe, with the except-ion of the diameter of the bore of the stummel, is identical with the ordinary type of push stem pipe. This feature may, however, be dispensed with and the ordinary arrangement adopted, it being necessary however to drill out the stummel for a greater depth to accommodate the cleaner which will now be described.
The cleaning attachment comprises a metallic blank or strip of metal 6 with its center portion widened out on opposite sides thereof to form a circular disk 7 having a smoke aperture 8 in its center. The opposite ends of the strip are extended laterally on either side thereof and form attaching bands 9 and 10. The latter band is provided with reduced tongues 11 which are adapted to be received in slots 12 in the band 9. Each band forms a semi-circular member which lies within the annular channel 13 formed in the reduced end 5 of the mout-lr piece, while the legs or side members of the device are held in longitudinal channels let.
When the attachment is applied by placing the semi-circular bands 9 and l0 within the channels and passing the tongues through the apertures 12 and the mouthpiece inserted in the stummel, the disk 7 forms a limiting stop for the tobacco placed in the bowl. The saliva which collects in the stuminel, together with small particles of tobacco, is removed with t-he removal of the mouthpiece.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is The combination with a pipe bowl having a stummel, and a mouth piece for said bowl, said mouth piece being provided with an annular channel and oppositely disposed longitudinal channels communicating with said annular channel, of a cleaning member comprising a single strip of metal having side members enlarged at their adjacent ends to form a 4cleaning disk which is adapted to close the bore in the stummel contiguous to the pipe bowl, said disk being provided with a smoke aperture, the opposite ends of said strip of metal being formed with lateral eX- tensions, one of said extensions having oppositely disposed slots, and the other eX- tension being formed with similar tongues adapted to be received in the slots in the other extension, the side members of the cleaner and said extensions being adapted to fit in said longitudinal and annular channels respectively.
In testimony whereof I aitiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT D. GRAME.
